It's My 52... ...again!

You may not be aware but I am challenging myself to another 52 week project. This will yet again test and push me further with my photography. This project is going to be all about food, but will have its own sub themes too. I started this at the beginning of the year, so month 1 is already in the bag :)

What's new Scooby Doo?

Those of you who have been following me, may have noticed that not much has been posted over the last year, that's not because nothing has happened - quite the opposite, it's because I have moved away from Blogger as my main blogging tool.

I will still add the odd post here and there but not as regular as I was doing several years ago. Should you like to know what I'm doing please go to my new blog on my Krysalis Photography website, to follow me there instead and catch up on all my happenings.

Always on my mind

Holding out for a hero

When I was a child my world was full of heroes, some real, most fictitious, but heroes nonetheless. Looking around today, I have to ask - where have all the heroes gone??

As a child I looked up to movie stars such as James Bond, Bruce Lee and of course, Superman. The TV was also a huge influence, full of strong (male-dominated) characters - from He-Man to The A-Team. My friends all wanted to be James Bond - he was cool, had adventures and always got the girl. By today's standards not the most politically correct role model, maybe, but still!

OK, so they were mostly fantasy-based, but they were strong characters and stood for what was right and just, it wasn't about me, me, me! They wanted to make the world a better, safer place for everyone - I grew up wanting to change the world, wanting to be the change, I didn't actually manage it :/
But those values were still embedded and worth holding onto, as I still do today.

Of course, the real heroes of the 20th century were actually the likes of Winston Churchill, Princess Diana and Gandhi, Martin Luther King, mainly because they were steadfast in their goals, and understood how to engage with people on a whole other level.

Today's society seems lost by comparison and their 'heroes' are 15 minute fame grabbing 'celebrities' - the only ambition they have is to be instantaneously rich and famous, and to hell with the world. I wonder what long-term effects this will have on the kids of today? The recent riots may have been a glimpse into their idea of what they perceive as right and wrong and reflect this vision.

Let's not forget the media, who play a huge role in fabricating idol-ism. They build up the 'next big thing' to happily bring them crashing down. We have seen this time and again with the likes of sports stars and musicians.

Given the state of society today, we need heroes more than ever, they offer us hope! Who is/was your hero? Name them and give them the credit they deserve.

Its all Greek to me

Friends, Grecians, Countrymen lend me your ears, for I have a tale to tell.
My vision of Greece was mainly concocted from films like Clash of the Titans, 300, Hercules, and of course, Jason and the Argonauts! Imagine my surprise when I arrived in Crete and saw no evidence of this fantastical notion.
Given that it's steeped in mythology I did expect to see more of this throughout the island - sadly the only place it was prevalent was in the souvenir shops. The unsuspecting traveller may well make this mistake. Today, Greece is famous for its landmark white buildings with blue domes but these images come almost entirely from Santorini, not Crete, which instead has its own unique charm - an island surrounded by the sea, with inviting beaches, quaint rural towns and villages, olive groves, vast mountains and gorges, what else do you need? So, onwards with our journey...

BALÍ

We left grey Gatwick and arrived in balmy Crete quite late, but on time. Emma (my flatmate) and I picked up the car from the airport and headed west - arriving in Balí at 1.30am yet we quickly got a room and then went out for a drink. I sampled my first Mythos, a Greek lager. It was quite surprising to see when we awoke in the morning that the sea was right opposite our window.

GEORGIOÚPOLI

Continuing our travels west we arrived at Georgioúpoli, which has the quaintest little white chapel - Agios Nikolaos, which sits at the end of a causeway. The chapel itself is not big enough for more than two people at one time but it's a great photo subject. After shooting the chapel from every conceivable angle we went to get lunch.
Later that night we walked along the beach to the town - a good hour's walk away. We had some great Greek food at a taverna in the main square and then maybe a tad too much to drink at another spot on the way back where they were serving cocktails for half price - we had a happy hour or two there, before making our way back along the beach in almost pitch blackness to what we thought was our hotel, only to discover we had walked 2km too far! How drunk were we?!

KALIVES

Next morning/afternoon when I awoke, I sought out coffee for our next leg of the journey then we headed north west to Kalives. We easily found a room, stocked up on supplies and went to see a wonder called Ó Koumos or Stone House. It a bizarre collection of buildings that have been fashioned and faced with small stones and pebbles. Not only that, it's also full of remarkable sculptures. It is the lifetime's work of one man. The site now however is a HUGE taverna, but it's still a great place to seek out - remember to take your camera too as everywhere you look there is something interesting to see.

The town is quaint and interesting with the church standing proud in the centre - here I got to test my camera's ability to shoot in really low light inside the darkened church, and it did me proud :)
I was finding it hard to sleep and kept waking up during the night - maybe it was the unfamiliar sounds or just the heat?!

The next day we headed out to Chania and we found the wonderful bustling indoor marketplace where items on sale ranged from souvenirs to pigs' heads. We then headed down to the harbour and walked along the wall to the huge lighthouse. After spending the rest of the afternoon with a late lunch and a wander through the meandering streets, we watched the sun set over the harbour and then moved on.

ELAFONÍSI

The drive south to Elafonísi was leisurely - not by choice but because the car in front was being driven at a snail's pace. With no room to overtake on the tight bends we just sat behind him and were united in berating his bad driving and ohhhing at the scenery. Once we did arrive at the beach, we found beautiful turquoise water and pink tinged sandy beaches - it looks like it used to be a wonderful hidden spot but now is a tourist trap with coachloads of people turning up around midday. It has little in the way of shade unless you hire a parasol and lounger - quite a booming trade I would imagine. Part of the beach in covered in black rocks and interesting vegetation, while the other part is soft windswept sand, I snapped away at things that caught my eye, while Emma chilled on the beach.

FALÁSARNA

We then had to drive north to reach Falásarna, which has a great viewpoint from where you can watch the sunset in a funky bar but not much else unless you go exploring the ancient part, which we did the following morning. The ruins are still being excavated and as you approach them you come to a HUGE stone throne - we stopped for some silly pictures, before continuing to the site. We looked around and tried to picture what it must have being like in its heyday. A huge chunk taken out of the top of a mountain got my attention and yet seemed to serve no purpose, why would they do that!?

PALAIÓCHORA

Time to head back down south to get to Palaióchora. We searched for a room but many places claimed to be full. I felt this to be a white lie - as it was still early on the weekend but as we were only staying for one night, I think they were holding out for someone taking the whole weekend, but eventually we found somewhere.

We were hoping to go on a dolphin-spotting boat trip, but sadly the boats only run on certain days (needless to say, this wasn't one of them) - although the signage at different shops would have you believe otherwise.So as this wasn't to be, we investigated the back streets and stumbled across a great little veggie restaurant called The Third Eye. It was very boho and the food was delicious (even without meat).

After all the chilling and wandering around I was seeking some real adventure, something like The Samaria Gorge, which is the largest Gorge in Crete at 16km in length and walking it takes around 7 hours to complete. However, given our time constraints, we paid our €2 entrance fee and tackled the second largest - the Imbros Gorge. This gorge is 8km long, at its narrowest point is 2m wide and the rock walls reach up 300m. It took us about 2.5 hours to complete - an easy enough walk with some really impressive WOW moments, very Indiana Jones feeling.The gorge is famous for the 1200 Sfarkian rebels who took full advantage of its rugged terrain to successfully hold off invading Turkish forces. Once we got to the end we shared a taxi back to the top with a Czech couple, one of whom pointed out it could have been done in 2 hours - without a camera - very true.

SPÍLI

Bearing east we set off for Spíli, a gorgeous mountain village with cobbled streets and rustic houses. Its square has an interesting water feature, a fountain with 19 lion heads spurting fresh cold water into it, from which locals (and tourists) fill their water bottles.We found a nice little hotel run by, and called, Heracles.
Heracles is a genuinely sweet man who offered us his expertise of the local area and pointed out landmarks. Not much happens in the evenings, so after an evening meal in a vine-covered taverna, we crashed in the silence of the mountains. Next morning, after a hearty breakfast of Heracles' home made produce - a selection of jams, honey and bread, we followed his advice to do one 'small' hike, which turned out to be quite the challenge but we managed it, only arriving back to check out slightly later than promised. He'd also recommended another local attraction called the St. Antonio Ravine. This ravine is 5km long, but takes about 2 hours to traverse, due to hard terrain, rope bridges and ladders (he didnt mention this part).

At the start of the ravine is the very old St. Antonio cave church. Now let me paint a clear picture - at this point we had ONLY intended to stop off for 10 minutes, we had no water and thus far had followed a very easy well-worn pathway. We now had a choice - turn back or follow the new path - which split into two. A sign in Greek said, something!? So Emma decided we take the path she didn't know the word for - this was to be our undoing. The pathway quickly started to dissolve and the rocks became bigger, but we pressed on. Then came the ropes and still we pressed on. The cobbled-together ladders were an interesting addition and really should have warned us of what lay ahead. The boulders got even larger, the ladders steeper, the rope handrails keeping us from falling off the sides as we crossed chasms more frayed, the gorge deeper and darker but YET we pressed on - foolishly, in retrospect.We eventually got to the end and, scrambled up a hillside, and found a road that (after walking it in blazing sunshine for 15 minutes) turned out to lead literally nowhere, we had to face the painful truth - the only way back was to do the ravine again in reverse! I must admit I was impressed as Emma became quite the intrepid explorer on a par with Lara Croft. Although at one point I thought I may have to leave her behind and seek help, she pushed on, not complaining once. We tried to keep our spirits up and whenever possible soaked our heads in pools of water.

Once we did finally make it out of the gorge, we advised several people who were heading in that the map saying exit led nowhere. We then hit the on-site taverna and downed a well-deserved Coke, a litre of water and a beer each in record time!

ÁGIOS NIKÓLAOS

With only two days left we continued east to the other side of the island and Ágios Nikólaos. We arrived in time for a very late dinner and a final sleep, then we picked up our final souvenirs and checked out the place in daylight. It's OK, but it's a very rich touristy kind of place, with fur shops and jewellers lining the streets. It was funny to watch the waiters spring to life as a cruise-ship of American tourists arrived.

Before heading to the airport, we spent the rest of our last day at Elounda. While there, an off-the-cuff comment led to a conversation which highlighted the economic struggle facing the Greeks. After finishing our meal, I asked the seemingly jovial taverna owner how business had been. He revealed that in the past two years he has had to raise his prices by 250% and yet he takes home five times less due to rising costs, taxes etc. I saw him shed a tear as he donned his large sunglasses and waved goodbye, walking back into his taverna which may well not be there in 2012. I couldn't help feeling for him.

Also something worth seeing (if you have time, sadly we didn't) is SPINALONGA. This is an island that was used from 1903 to 1957 as a Leper Colony.

In General

The beer, Mythos, was very nice, cold, and slipped down all too easily. The food was simple but rich and I made sure I tried many new interesting dishes such as; Tzatziki, Briam, Moussaka, Souvlaki, Stifado, Yemista, Gigantes, Dolmades, Horiatiki, Spanakopita, Saganaki.

Even though we were there towards the end of the season, I still found it too hot to sleep and Emma frequently awoke in the middle of the night to find me by the open fridge trying to cool down.
Mosquitoes were rife and I awoke every morning with more new bites to add to my growing (and itching) collection.

If I had to fault the Cretans on anything it would be their signage. We frequently found ourselves missing turns as the road sign was either not in place, hidden by trees, shot, graffitied over or right on the turn as you passed it.

But I must admit Crete has plenty to offer the traveller and I thoroughly enjoyed my time there. A special thanks to Emma for driving (nearly constantly) and having me accompany her and share the adventure together. Please take the time to enjoy the slideshow of our trip :)

A Broken Society?

I hear shouts from Bob the Builder - CAN WE FIX IT? But no reply!Cameron talks about a 'broken society' with his privileged background, what does he know about the common man? To make matters worse, he doesn't even consult with those that do, instead makes nonsense sweeping gestures and soundbites - role up your sleeves and get stuck in, lead by example Mr Cameron!
And watch who you are pointing your fingers at, as we the people, have far less to hide than your lot!!

I think this great track sums up attitudes of many and yet Cameron still didn't see it coming! At least Dizzee has his finger on the pulse.

A 'Crash' course in photography

Some days it's good to be me! Having recently won two categories in the Fotothon challenge I took part in last month I was content enough, but then I got a name check in Practical Photography for my work with the Brighton Rock'ed photoshoot, and I was acknowledged by Stephen Cotterell on his 121 podcasts. I was feeling very happy! What more could I want? A photoshoot with a top photographer?! Well, thanks to Lel and Jaz, I managed to get just that!

On Sunday I had the honour and privilege of attending a training course with the amazing Crash Taylor who is without a doubt one of the UK's top photographers and a contributor to several photography magazines. It's long way from Brighton to Nottingham but Emma kindly agreed to drive me there and it was SO worth it. I arrived in Nottingham and excitedly entered Crash's studio - what a cool joint it is. Crash is all set up with stacks of Apple products, a huge library of reading material, a studio space, a viewing room and an inspiration wall, all neatly tucked inside an open-plan studio space where he also used to live This surprised me a little but showed what is possible if you use space well.

Warm greetings were exchanged as more and more people arrived from the Shutter Rock group. Models (Natasha Andrioti, Andrea Hajdinova & Leonie Manners) were being prepped and Holly (on work experience) did a fab job of meeting and greeting, as Crash mingled and ensured everyone was comfortable. After a while everyone settled in and Crash put his game face on - the same one as before, just smilier! He really is a genuinely nice guy. We left his studio and hit the streets of Nottingham - a large group of photographers walking the streets with Union Jack merchandise and models - it must have looked like an Olympic bid promotional event!

The rain threatened to stop play - but Crash wouldn't allow anything to spoil our fun, so we found a dry, grungy area and set up shop there, shooting the models against a variety of natural backdrops - walls, fences etc using only available light. We changed location several times and, considering how cold it was, the models did a great job, taking direction well and ensuring everyone got the shots they wanted. One tog even brought along some smoke pellets which created an awesome effect, something I would like to use again :)

Crash was very generous with his time, skills and knowledge as he shared how he got started, what to look out for, his work flow, marketing and much more. Sadly, before I got entranced by it all and refused to leave, I had to make my excuses as we had another long drive ahead of us.

I tried where possible to mix model shots with group ones capturing everyone in action. It was a nice, warm, friendly group of people and was an experience way above and beyond my expectations. Massive thanks again to Lel Hurst, Jaz Ampaw-Farr & Crash Taylor. More can be seen on my WEBSITE

On top of all this I have a great commercial shoot coming up with a Brighton based bespoke jewellery designer. It should be lots of fun, I heard talk of wine!

Sh, sh, sh, sh, Shutter Rock

Last weekend was the first Shutter Rock gathering and promo photoshoot. What a gathering it turned out to be. Spearheaded by Gary Marshall (aka Marshall Gray) and Jaz Ampaw Farr, we met at Brighton Pier on a cloudy, chilly, rain at moment, Sunday morning - did that dampen our spirits? No! We were too engrossed with each other and what we were doing to notice.

"So this little shoot was inspired by those influences and discussions I had with Jazla (Jaz Ampaw Farr) who is the maverick supergal dynamo founder of Shutterrock UK. Sometimes in life you come across the kind of rare individual whose zest for life shows in everything they do. This kind of person puts their whole self on the table and keeps nothing back in reserve. It’s like they either do life 100% or not at all. This takes an enormous amount of trust and vulnerability on that persons behalf. They lay themselves open for life’s snipers maybe more so than the rest of us. We have to take care of these special folk in my book."

I couldn't have put it any better myself, the energy that Jaz has is infectious and she has a great way of bringing you along for the ride, Gary was lead photographer with this shoot as we followed his lead. I noticed he is a very considered photographer and very much fits the part, he looked at ease directing and shooting - not to mention his cool cockney accent.

What was great from my point of view was all the talent I was surrounded by and lack of egos, lack of kit envy, lack of attitude - we all just seemed to exist in the moment and I think that's what Shutter Rock is all about. "The Grumpies", as Dane Sanders calls them, were obviously not present at this shoot and I dont think Shutter Rock is for them - but this new wave of social friendly, open sourced, sharing driven, photography community is going to be huge, it IS the way forward.

To me, Shutter Rock is kind of a much needed movement, to some it's a community, to others it's a reflection of the industry and however you see it, it's a positive step forward and can be what you want it to be, the only requirement is to get involved.

There is a going to be a HUGE photography event in November as details emerge I will of course keep you informed. In the meantime join the Facebook group and check out the WEBSITE. Smaller events are planned throughout the UK so its worth seeing if anything is happening in your area.

Finding Mojo

While I was away in Spain, a lot of camera-related activities took place in Brighton - festivals, workshops, photowalks and it felt like I had really missed out. I needn't have worried. There is such a buzz right now with photography that everywhere I look or turn, I find something happening. If you're into photography but not familiar with the Brighton scene, here are a few things you should check out:-

Nadine Burzler - Nadine is doing some great personal projects such as Instragram walks and Polaroid in the Park - she's very bubbly and looks set to go far with several additional ideas in the pipeline.

Stewart Weir has teamed up with David Freeman (no relation), to host Chameleon Phototours, planning to take groups to such diverse places as the Lake District and Barcelona. More details on the tours can be found on Stewart's website.

Fotothon - a great little idea, with big potential. It's a photographic quest which will take place on Saturday June 11th 2011 from noon till 5pm. Participants will be given 10 clues or hints and they'll have 5 hours to scour Brighton for photographic opportunities which interpret those clues in any way they see fit. There will be prizes for the best overall winner as well as in individual categories.

ShutterRock - a fantastic online sharing community, helping to shape the face of photography and very much NOW - if you need an invite to the group let me know :)

Photography 121 - a wonderful podcasts by Stephen Cotterell in which he interviews photographers and talks about their personal experiences on their photographic journeys.

Add the Colour - a popular photography haunt and coffee shop, where photographers can display their work. The MINICLICK talks are also held here, once a month.

Eclectia Gallery - a local gallery/studio based at Brighton Marina. Current plans include running studio-based workshops and the opportunity to hire their studio space which has recently been upgraded thanks to sponsorship from The Flash Centre.

As time goes by

After a year away I finally returned to Spain. Not much had changed, it still felt familiar, although my language skills must have evaporated in the heat. The trip - quiet, uneventful and long.

Being apart for a year I was apprehensive about this visit not knowing what was expected or how to be - so I decided to just be myself, warts and all. It took Ari sometime to come round to looking at me, talking to me or being near me, this was much harder that I thought - I was hoping for open arms and cuddles so tight they would turn me blue :/

Finally she warmed up and started being herself and let me hold her again - how I missed that. Ariadna is much bigger now and a little chatterbox to boot - although I have little idea what she was talking about most of the time, as she rambled away in Spanish.

We spent a few days in Madrid and visited the zoo, which pitu loved - seeing all the animals and learning about them. Last time she was there with me she was a baby, now she is an amazing little person. While I had the chance over these 2 weeks, I took the opportunity to photograph Ari, some posed, some relaxed - she had her moments when she was a willing subject and not. It's funny seeing the 'me' in her. I managed to get some great shots of her which will be treasured. What will I miss the most? her growing up? her making friends? her first day at school? Of course, but more than that, it's her cheeky smile, her laughter, her energy, her touch, her unconditional, unjudging and unrelenting love.

Sandra and I spent the first 2 days not knowing how to be with each other, which is sad when you consider we spent 3 years in a relationship. We finally decided that just being friends was at least a base to work from and moved us away from the awkwardness. Sandra did her best to ensure I was as comfortable as possible and has done a great job looking after Ari, and I know she will continue to do so - just speak more English with her! We took some time to discuss our own situations and we appear to want different things, although we still want what's best for Ari - a sad story I'm all to familiar with. So we will be going our separate ways, that at least answers that lingering question. I hope you find what you need to make your life complete.

While in Madrid I witnessed the beginning of the Spanish revolution in Puerta del Sol. The people of Spain are demanding democracy, economic change and jobs as the government prepares for another election. The protests soon spread across the country in 60 cities and around 130,000 protesters took to the streets. Sadly I didn't have my camera on me, and the protest at that point was not to the scale it later became, and to be honest, I wasn't fully aware of the size of the issues. My chance to catch history in the making dashed!

Yet again a volcanic eruption threatened my leaving Spain, you couldn't make this up, really - luckily it passed without much disruption.

Ari cracked me up the other day, when asked "how do you say goodbye in English?" she replied by waving her hand, simples!!!

I realised I have far less patience than I thought and I'm not as good a person I thought I was, I can also add this the fact I am quite selfish - a quite sobering realisation. The question is, what do I do about this? My experiences have made me quite bitter and angry and although I keep trying to shake this off it comes over me like a wave sometimes and I feel myself drowning under the pressure. I've being listening to positive motivational podcasts and reading books etc in order to help pull me out of my darkness and find a better place to be, this works to a degree, but I fear I need more permanent professional help.

Urbex: Alexandra Children's Hospital

This morning I found myself awake at 8:30am ready to head out to do some urban exploration photography of the old abandoned children's hospital on Dyke Road, the weird things we do for pleasure and exploration.

The Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children was opened by the Prince and Princess of Wales in 1881. It remained in use for more than a century before being replaced by a new building at the main Royal Sussex County Hospital site. The new facility opened in June 2007, and has won architectural awards for its innovative design.

The same could not be said for what remained at the old site. It is simply a vandalised shell of its former self. The rooms; bare, graffitied, vandalised and rotting, made for some uninspiring shots - so I focussed more on the fixtures and fitting. The ghosts of the building milling around you as you crunch your way through glass encrusted floors, shimmers of light break through the citex, allowing only a glimpse of what may be inside the room.

Security was onsite but posed no obvious threat as I made my way through each of the rooms. Whilst I looked around trying to understand what each room was, how it connected with the others and what it would have been like in its former glory, I also wondered why people pointlessly destroy so much, and how easily we turn our backs on the old for new. After about an hour I had seen all there was to see and made my way out, leaving only footprints behind - at least I hope so!

Brighton Rock'ed Photoshoot

If you are going to have a dream, dream big! This has always been my approach - rightly or wrongly - and with this venture it was no different.

I had a dream - to build a community, to work alongside photographers, models, makeup artists, hairstylists and clothing suppliers on a big production, and this was a chance to do just that. Now believe me when I say that this was still a scaled-down version of my ideal which would have involved full designed sets, rotations of clothing and models, studio lighting on hand, smoke machines, milk shakes, the list goes on - but all that comes at a cost and this project was not about money. I almost made it happen without spending a penny too, with everyone giving up their time, products and skills for free*. That was no simple feat considering it was my first group photo venture - I have only been in Brighton for 3 months, know few people and am relatively unknown myself. Now don't get me wrong, I have organised many things before. In fact, that constituted most of my previous work in Spain but there the participants were captive and willing.

*The agreement is the models, stores, hairstylists and makeup artists have access to all the images shot by all the photographers to use as they wish for commercial promotions etc - fair trade ;)

We arrived bright and early to set up the dressing room and hair & makeup studio for the models. The models started to drift in, then the makeup artists and hair stylists, closely followed by the girls' clothing stylist (I had picked up the men's clothes the night before and brought them with me.) I was finally starting to see the pieces fit together and eagerly anticipated seeing it in full swing. I was mindful that the photographers were awaiting my arrival on the seafront so I headed off, leaving the girls in capable hands to get ready. I greeted the photographers and gave them the outline of the event - everyone was up for it and dying to see the models all made up, as was I. I had a good idea about how this project was to run and I'm pleased to say it went better than expected. We had a group of photographers, a team of hair stylists, a gaggle of models, a wardrobe of clothes, a riot of mods, lighting supplied by Mother Nature and a damn good time.

The models looked fantastic, not just because they were models but due to the hair, makeup and clothing which really made all the difference. As I dashed about ensuring everyone knew what they were doing and why, I realised I was missing my opportunity to shoot too. I had actually set up a whole storyboard for each genre but because I never really got into my groove, my attention being split in many different directions, I didn't manage to get many of my planned images, just grabbed shots here and there. It was a bit of a shame as I had had a whole Film Noir story planned.

Now I know some people may not believe it but I did relinquish some control - not much but a little. So I'm not a total control freak, right!? I would like to thank Emma, Linda and Ash for their assistance on the day and in advance. I would like to thank Stephen for checking I had all his questions answered before he had asked them.

The model releases, although a necessary evil, turned out not to be the nightmare I had imagined, as we could get them signed in the final minutes of shooting at each station. I have seen some amazing images and met some great folks from this venture, there just wasn't enough time to chill and chat with them all. Now that the images are being uploaded it's great to see the things I missed - different approaches to shots, different processing styles and the wealth of skills involved by each person.

One shot I was longing to get was a Quadrophenia style scooter drive-by. Unfortunately 3 scooters do not a rally make! Even though there was a large number of scooters there, they just didn't leave or arrive en masse.

So the big question is, would I do it again? Of course I would! I learnt a lot and understand the flow better now, though maybe, just maybe, I will make it smaller next time ;)

All quiet on the Southern front?

I know, I know, I've done it again, neglected you, my loyal reader(s). Well I have been slightly busy and this is my excuse. I am planning a photoshoot in Brighton - admittedly initially nothing on the scale it has become, but hey I love a challenge. The organising side of it all is keeping me very busy, but with around 60 people involved it does need organising.
The shoot was an idea I had about doing a themed shoot / a meet up with other photographers and the film - Brighton Rock. From all that I combined the ideas to produce what looks set to be an epic photoshoot. The shoot will revolve around 50s, 60s and Film Noir as the themes. I have original Mods coming down on their scooters and convinced some great vintage stores to provide us with clothing to use. On top of that we have 20 models, 40 photographers and 9 stylists! Told you it was big.

I have been posting on my Krysalis Photography website which has updates and info on a wedding shoot, a commercial shoot, a wedding fayre and also a trip to Telford / Birmingham to check out the FOCUS on imaging 2011 event. More details available on that site - I'm not going to duplicate posts, so nip over and give them a read.

I have also looked at several studios, but rather than looking at them as a space of my own, I am seeing them as hire options - as they are all quite different and suit various purposes. It would seem more places are now renting out their studio space, proving just how difficult the economy still is for small businesses. On top of all that I am preparing for a wedding shoot in 10 days too.

Build it and they will come

Having worked hard on getting the look and feel of my new website - KRYSALIS PHOTOGRAPHY right, I kinda hoped it would start the ball rolling and enquiries coming in. Sadly, I have gotten more calls from bloody advertising agents than anyone else. I must start being firmer and saying no, straight away - "does that sound like something you would be interested in, Mr Freeman" grrrrrrrr.

Given that things were trickling in I did decide that maybe it was worth having some paid advertising but what, where and with whom?! One company did a mighty fine job of persuading me they were the right people for me and their offer was not unbelievable and seemed fair enough - damn my spidey-sense!!! It turned out all they wanted was my bank details then took it upon themselves to empty my account without consent, stupid me!

So I still need the advertising but not sure I want to go down this road again, hmmmmm.

I have had my work up in a few places now too, not sure how much interest that's driving, I'll give it another week and go find out. Adverts in shops and business windows doesn't seemed to have brought in anything either, but it is getting the name out there, at least I hope it is!?

What is the best approach!? I no longer understand Google and their ranking system, which they dont allow you to know where you are? Stupid if you ask me, if they are going to rank you, you should be able to see where you come and why.

I have done as much SEO stuff as I can, but I do feel its feeling my way around in the dark a bit too much. It would be nice to understand it properly, just for my own piece of mind. I think the site itself is simple, easy to navigate and fast loading, its the marketing side that's letting it down and unless you search for Krysalis Photography by name I doesn't seem to appear, and that's not good!!!!

So if anyone can offer any hints tips or advice PLEASE do so.

The things we do for money

Sometimes you've gotta do what you've gotta do. So I've been spending an interesting few days in a clinical trial. Why? To save little bunnies from being experimented on? To give the animals a break? To help further mankind? erm, NO! MONEY, plain and simple. Yes its gotten that desperate. Now don't get me wrong I haven't sold my kidneys or anything, well not yet at least.

I applied to an ad to be used in an experimental drug for diabetes with Quintiles Medical research. Having been selected I thought from that point, I was in. Two grand for two weeks in a hospital bed, cant be that bad. As it turned out my body had other plans, apart from giving me manflu a week before I was due to go in, my triglycerides decided they were going to mess about and were in too high a range for the trial, so after a few days it hadn't gotten into an acceptable range, so I was dismissed from the trial.

"How do you feel Mr Freeman", the doctor asked - pi*%ed off, annoyed, frustrated, upset, I thought, but I responded with "it's fine, you have to do what you have to do, it was nice meeting you". Inside I shattered knowing everything that money had already allocated toward, my business, Sandra and Pitu and Emma, before leaving I checked to see if they could transfer me to another trial as I was already there and been screened, sadly not.

So what did we have to do whilst there, well to be fair the facilities were not that bad at all, Sky movies and Sky sports, a pool table, games, computer room - the computers were hit and miss on working properly. All the above is fine, when you can actually leave the ward to use them - my advice, take a laptop and plenty of movies. The not-so-pleasant side of this trial were the vast amounts of blood that was taken about every 20 mins or so, 8 vials 15 times a day, boy we were drained and how did they replenish all that blood? By giving us cold dry pasta, frozen peas and a yoghurt pot FULL of mayonnaise - which had to be eaten separately, so not nice! The meals to be honest were dire all pre-cooked and warmed up, if you were lucky and very small portions. Then not only did they want your blood but also your other waste! We had to poop in a bucket and pee in tubes, such a pleasant job for some poor guy - I really cant imagine that person at school saying to his career adviser "I want to poke around in peoples poop!" but it has a cool title as I was told, biochemical analyst, better than poop checker I guess.

The nurses were fine and for the most time pleasant, but there were very obvious tensions which I think was bad form to let the already nervous participants aware of this, one nurse actually throwing stuff on the floor in frustration/anger and openly arguing with another nurse. Not professional at all and hardly instilled us with confidence. I guess it is hard, each trial having it own criteria and nurses being drafted in for an hour then swapped others, constantly having to be brought up to speed and the same questions / mistakes happening over and over - but it is simple to address I think.

As for the brave boys who were with me on the trial there 10 of us including me. A mixed bag - all ages, races and backgrounds. A few South Africans, an Estonian, a Manc, a Scouser, a film maker, a carpenter, a guy who writes children's stories, all very interesting people and I do hope everything goes well on this study for them. Each person having there own reason for being there, and the money was it for everyone - it was frighting to consider how many people were there and what each one is paid plus the nursing costs and misc costs (nothing was spent on the meals, really) must be a small fortune which shows how much that industry is worth. Personally with unemployment rises as it is I can see this becoming a income for lots of people.

So the plus side, well I get some money for the few days I was in and I lost 1.2kg. Would I do it again? Yes, because my situation hasn't changed I still need the money as I did before. I now know what I'm getting into so I can be better prepared mentally and physically as long as you have no fear of needles, go for it :)

Week 51 & 52 - finally!

I know I haven't blogged much of late but really I've been a busy bee, honestly I have! Hmm, so what have I done over the past few weeks. Well on Christmas Day I went to the Brighthelm centre to feed the homeless and hungry. It was much more rewarding than staying at home, watching crappy tv and feeding my own face with too much food.

It was nice to see so many people giving up their time and skills to help out and make a difference to those less fortunate.

Since Christmas I have been working on making my website more appropriate to my business, as before it was more a gallery than a 'working' website. I am pleased to say that after a few hiccups and headaches it's now live and I'm looking for clients to photograph for any occasion!!!

My 52 project has just been finished! I can't believe it - late again, because I was unhappy with my Christmas theme and wanted a reshoot - I'm going to settle for the image I have and week 52 was composite, which I like the concept, just not sure about the final image!? I am going to turn the project into a coffee table book and slideshow as I am very pleased with my progress, considering I'm self taught and just tried out random ideas and never done one before. The question is will I do one this year? Answer, errr, NO! It was far harder than I thought and very consuming, but next year I might just to gauge my progress.

Week 50 of 52

I know, I know - I'm yet again behind on this project. But with good reason, I'm busy putting together certain things for my future business, such as: business plans, website 2.0 and looking for studio premises.

This is a theme I have been itching to do it for quite sometime. The concept was based on a Bryan Peterson idea. Well, this was the moment I got to finally do it.

The theme was LETTERS. Everywhere around us we are faced with letters. Words from signs, logos, directions, warnings, information, names - so I was hardly short of opportunity to find them. The one thing I wanted to do on this challenge was try to find different and interesting letters and shapes. Luckily Brighton is full of weird and wonderful Typography.

Given that I was behind I took several hours yesterday to shoot the whole alphabet from various locations around the town. I did plan on doing two alphabets one using proper letters and the other using abstract letters made from windows, doors and fences etc. But that would take more than a few hours. I will construct that version next year ;)

Wow this 52 has been much tougher than I ever thought. Im not sure I will do this again for at least another year. By which time I hope my photography will have improved slightly more, time will tell ;)

As I am behind and lighting is awful currently I have suffered to find something worthwhile and still lacking motivation somewhat. To make matters slightly worse I seem to have developed an issue with my shoulder/back - not too sure what it is but it is very tender to the slightest touch, yet not so painful when pressed? Also today I felt what seemed like a very hot needle being inserted into my back, there wasn't, that is unless someone has a voodoo doll of me!?

I had a few more images I could have used for this theme, but I felt they weren't good enough, so I went with a few stronger images rather than adding weaker ones just for the sake of it.I am sure if I took longer I could come up with something better, but im happy with the few shots I have.
Emma and I went for a hike (and a proper hike it was) up to the Jack and Jill windmills in the South Downs. Sadly the Jack windmill is on private land and cannot be accessed, having said that Jack is quite a dilapidated windmill unlike Jill. So I happily snapped away at Jill while I looked for interesting angles and shapes to shoot.

This theme was easier to do as it embodies more possibilities and allowed me to practise my landscape shots a little more too. Luckily the weather has been quite mixed of late, so I have managed to get some diverse, and what I think, interesting shots.

Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho, Ho...

I awoke a little late, and forced myself to climb out from under my warm duvet. I was already late, and it was getting later, as I dashed around collecting my camera gear - whilst drinking a cup of coffee to wake me up. Today was the day I would see Santa! Well multiple Santas in fact. This was the morning of the Brighton Santa Dash 2010.

It was kind of surreal to see so many Santas in one place and even stranger was the fact they were running a 5k race, for fun!?! Due to my late arrival I never managed to get any portrait shots I was hoping for, so I focussed on getting some action shots instead.

The turnout to support the red and white suited wonders was little scarce which was a shame, in fact only one of the reindeer turned up. Anyway the winner of the race did it in 17:57 and well done to him ;)
I thought it bad form to take shots of faces as red as their suits as they crossed the finish line, although some seemed to be enjoying it far too much, and one even crossed the finish line with his car keys in-hand, did he really run or do Santa suits not have pockets!?

Week 47 of 52

A bit of business before I get down to my 52 week project. My Macbook suffered its first (and hopefully only) malfunction last week - the graphics card started playing up. So I took it into the nice people at the Apple store and they checked it out, only to find no problem. Typical it works when you don't want it too.

I returned home, and for a while, maybe a day, it worked fine then started playing up again. This time I managed to get screen-shots to show them, just in case. So I took it back showed them the issues and they said they would take it in for repair - parts and labour cost was to be £350!!! After a little gulp to myself, he then added "which of course we will waiver as you have had no problems before, looked after your mac" and "its a nice thing to do". I paused with baited breathe, did my ears deceive me!??!

Now I am a huge advocate of Apple, but really this takes customer service to a whole new level. They did indeed fix the problem by replacing the part and did it within 4 days - now THAT'S service, oh, and they smiled about it too :)

What else have I been up to in the past week? Well, we had a HUGE snowstorm, more on that later, and I had my second brain scan, which was fun.
The first part of this scan involved seeing how you react emotionally to movie scenes such as Forest Gump, Dead Poets, Blair Witch and American History X amongst others. Then a series of questions needed to be completed, boring!!! But the cool thing was, seeing how you brain waves were affected by tension and relaxation (gritting your teeth or closing your eyes) - very cool!!

Only problem is you looked a little weird, this is how I think I looked, I might be wrong, there was no mirror.

On with the 52...

...as I mentioned before there had been a snowstorm. Now when I say this you may think it snowed a little? A faint frosting perchance? NO! IT REALLY SNOWED! In fact I had never seen snow like this in the UK before. But this did give me the perfect opportunity to play my WINTER card for my 52. Everywhere was covered in several inches of snow. Trains had stopped running, the country had ground to a complete stop, it was that bad!

So armed with my camera I set off the get some wintry shots.

The problem I soon found was few places were accessible. My bottom of my jeans had frozen and became like cardboard - you could quite literally knock on them. But I persevered and managed to go for a stupidly long walk along the coastline towards Peacehaven. I took several shots along the way and got what I hoped would be the winner for the week. On the way back the sun had gone down and the temperature had plummeted. So rather than walk back, I made my way for one of the few running buses. After about 40 minutes one pulled up, I jumped on frozen, the driver obviously in good spirits then refused to take my £20, saying "it wasn't allowed" and told me to get off the bus - if only Apple ran buses!?!

So I decided I would walk back after all, but it was bitter cold and my toes were numb (well I think they were, I couldn't feel them). Along came another bus and this time the driver had no issues whatsoever!? hmmm, some people!

Week 47 - WINTER

Yet again time is going faster than my little size 9s can take me, as the weeks seem to blend together and I find myself a week behind yet again!

As I mentioned in my last post I had attempted to do some night photography, of which I was unhappy with. So I decided to take the time to do it tonight and make the most of it. So armed with everything except a pair of gloves I set off. Gloves turned out to be the one thing I needed most as it was bitterly cold. I met Emma out of work and she bared the freezing cold with me whilst I trekked around looking for images of interest.

Having been out before I had a rough idea of some shots I wanted to improve upon, so I got those and also worked on some light trails and shots of light reflections on the ocean, these were new and something I wanted to play with for a while. Sunday nights are not the best time to get loads of traffic so took quite sometime to get at least a shot I was happy with even if it wasnt what I wanted overall.

Anyway, these images I am more impressed with and I felt that the night, even though cold, was worthwhile. With each press of the shutter my fingers got number until my battery died and I could call it a night. On the way home as a reward we nipped into a bar for hot mulled wine, YUMMY!!!

Readers Digest

With the sudden cold snap in the air it's apparent Winter has arrived. So what have I been doing down here in Brighton you may be wondering? Well to start with, I've being on the lookout for a studio space and made several promising leads. I have spoken to lots of cafes and restaurants about exhibiting my work on their walls, which will be followed up - as I have large prints of my images coming from Loxley Colour shortly.

I took a walk down The Lanes to do some night photography and even though it's currently lit up with Christmas lights, I didn't feel inspired and my 52 is falling behind again, which means a revisit is in order, with fresher eyes.

The Royal Pavilion has currently got an ice rink built onto the front of it, along with a very expensive pop-up style Chinese restaurant at £90 per head! The only cool thing about this is the fact that the Palace is now illuminated with pretty blue lights.

Earlier in the week I did a photo session with Alex - a French Canadian, after he answered an ad I posted about wanting a model to photograph. I wanted to practise some ideas and work on my photography more as I feel it needs pushing more than it has been. The whole story can be read HERE

Interestingly just as we had finished the shoot the student protests kicked off. I had put away my camera at this point for fear of vandalism or confiscation, as the police and students vied for control of the streets.

This could be a hard week as it's China's and Pitu's Birthday this week, neither of which I will get to see. Each year it's harder knowing I am not there and unable to be part of their lives as I ought to be. I have resigned myself to the fact that Deb will not allow China and I to have contact any longer, personally I think this is pathetic and unnecessary as no one gains from this BS, but then again I expected too much of her all along, so I shouldn't be surprised.

As for Pitu, this is her second birthday and my first year without her, and yes it hurts, I'm sad and sadder we are in this place, having left to build a better life. I hope there is a way to resolve this issue as I don't like the pattern forming, even though it's not one of my design. For Pitu's birthday I bought her, her first camera!!! I'm sure she will be showing me how to do it properly in a few years, kids learn SO fast this days.

On Saturday I was invited to photograph a secret event for 350.org. This was part of the 350 EARTH planetary art show. It was an interesting shoot involving around 2000 people (not sure how secret it was given 2000 people showed up!?), who became part of a human sculpture of King Canute on Brighton's seafront, trying but failing to command the ocean. The image was designed by Radiohead's Thom Yorke who generously donated his time, energy and art to make the event a success. Sadly he didn't show up to the actually 'making of'. I can't say as I blame him really, it was FREEZING!!! I half expected him to drive up, wind down his window, give us a thumbs up and drive away.

What I enjoyed about this event was the fact the people all bonded in a way people do when they all suffer the same adversity and they do something thats bigger than themselves. It started slow to then suddenly lots of people joining in from all over and kept in good spirits even though the wind chill was harsh. The people amassed in a sea of blue cagoules and were ushered into place by stewards. Later we had some groups in yellow cagoules who formed the 350 part of the picture.

There were a lot of other talent involved in this project too, such as PETRUSCO and filming and interviewing people on the ground, and freezing along with us, was the fantastic crew of FLYCREATIVE. Not to forget of course the lady who orchestrated the whole event on the day Jo Hedges, who deserves a massive - 2000 thank yous!!!!

From the ground it was really hard to get a sense of scale and overall idea of the design, but flying overhead we had a plane taking aerial shots, someone else was filming time lapse material and several other cameras placed in prime locations. Brain Freeze

Not being keen on early mornings, I arose from a warm snuggly duvet to the cold brisk air. My first thoughts, coffee! But not today, I couldn't. I wasn't allowed any stimulants before getting my brain scanned - insert any four lettered word here - *&^%!!

We arrived at the university for my scan, and that in itself made me feel like I was already being tested, like a rat in a maze. But we found the building and entered. I was greeted with various paperwork, then ushered into a small room. Whilst I continued filling out various forms and what not, the Doctor?, Scientist?, person in white coat, started attaching various leads to my head. Several part of my body had to be shaved, to ensure good contact was made with the cables for monitoring purposes. I remained calm on the outside but full of trepidation inside. Finally all the cords were attached and I headed down to the machine. At this point I looked like a futuristic rastafarian, as different coloured cables were coming out from my head and several body parts.

Once inside the room I saw the machine, and I was immediately warned that if I had ANY metal to remove it as it would act like a MISSILE once the machine was turned on - OK, if I wasn't panicking before, that did it. I quickly double and triple checked my body and pockets. Then once strapped into the machine I was asked to perform simple tests so they could see how I handled pressure etc. The machine was a little claustrophobic and very noisy. The tests took around 2 hours in total. Below you can see what they saw of my brain. Yes, I was surprised not to see a big empty space too.

The image below was not actually taken on the day and is an artists impression of what was expected to have been found. It turned out I'm normal, whatever that is?!?

Brain Training

There was an ad placed recently on Gumtree to have your brain scanned - the study involves completing some simple computerised tasks during an MRI brain scanning while they monitor your bodily reactions (e.g. heart rate), then a day later, another that involved being connected to EEG brain monitoring equipment whilst you perform simple computer based tasks - of course I applied to both, and why not! The hardest part of these tests is the fact I cant drink coffee for 24 hours!!

Here are my psychological results from the second test: I'm a O76-C52-E79-A10-N71 Big Five!!

Not sure what that really says about me, but I think at this point, I'm too set in my ways. Maybe that's not a bad thing, at least you know what you're getting, most of the time. I do think I'm easily frustrated with myself, the world and life in general - then on other days I wake up and the world seems at peace with me. Do we all have this inner turmoil? Is it just those with artistic temperaments and middle aged women that have severe mood swings!? Or is this an effect of a bi-polar disorder?

Even as a kid, I always shot for the stars. I don't see it as a huge fault, yes, typically I get disappointed when I don't achieve what I want, but by the same token dreaming big doesn't phase me. Speaking to a stranger on the street or pushing for something I believe in has never been an issue, having said that, selling something I don't believe in has. I had a job when I was young selling 'rendition' perfumes that I just didn't buy into at all, and consequently couldn't sell them. But by the same token, I have done work that I believe in 100% and sold it with all my heart, sometimes getting frustrated when people didn't see what I saw.

Typically, I believe in people more than products (unless its Apple), I get pissed off that people aren't invested in enough. I have had the fortune to meet and work with some amazing talent, who are just crying out to be discovered or given a break. Having done; acting, magic and photography amongst other 'creative' jobs, I constantly see the same battles being fought for funding, training, assistance, guidance etc. To address this issue I am currently playing with the idea of starting a co-operative for photographers and looking at finding ways to make the industry more sexy instead of this insular entity that it currently appears to be. See, there I go again, trying to fix the world :/

The big question is: will you EVER be satisfied?!

Week 45 of 52

I am in a strange place right now, no I don't mean Brighton, although.....! I don't know why but my head and heart are at battle with each other. Since the split with Sandra I have found it hard to know what I'm feeling, pretty much about anything. They claim that it takes a month for every year you were together to heal - not sure that's right, some days it feels so raw others are fine and I'm still floundering around for answers which never come :(

My aims and aspirations are moving forward but not as I would like, but then I never did set my standards low. Emma and I, walked around several cafes and bars and quite a few are willing to hold a viewing of my work, which is nice. Now I just need to pick the images I think are best, have the widest appeal (with a view to selling them) and then hope this helps get my name out and push my work forward. I personally feel my photography hasn't moved on much for a while now. I am seeking various photography positions and opportunities to help change this - one of which is photographing inside nightclubs, not great but its work (at least for now).

OK enough chatter, onto the week - I had GRAFFITI as my theme, and Brighton being Brighton didn't let me down, almost any quiet street you go down there is Graffiti. I mean that in a positive way. To me, graffiti is art not tagging (just writing your name on the wall) - I think you would agree that the folks images below have a real talent for art and very creative. I liked the Chess image but the fear in the eyes did it for me, I just loved that comic styling :)

All change for Brighton please, all change! I am now here, in Brighton! So what's changed apart from the geography? Well, I'm now staying with a friend - Emma, I have a new 2.8L lens, I have hair and a beard and thanks to Hussian I now have a printed portfolio of my images - to promote to local businesses and potential clients. Hopefully my mojo will catch up soon and I will start feeling back on top.

To that end, I have being doing photo walks - just going out and about and taking photos of whatever catches my eye, some images were good whilst others turned out to be nothing of interest when I finally got home and reviewed them.

Week 43: PHOTO WALK

I recently went to a photography workshop - which has potential to be worthwhile if developed further, but it was aimed a little low for me. What it did do however, was highlight what I already know is more than I thought ;)

I have a few plans in mind and when the time is right I will launch them. Right now I am looking at studio spaces, opportunities within venues and making use of the environment around me, oh and of course, global domination, all good things.....

....anyhoo. There was a car rally last weekend with vintage cars travelling from London to Brighton which appears to have been going for some years now (the annual event that is, not the race). It was good to see some of the older cars coughing and spluttering along, their metal parts glistening in the sun, the drivers wrapped up warm donning various driving goggles. The sad part came when we (the spectators) were forced to stay behind barriers and could only view them from afar. I like to get up close and personal - to take detail shots, luckily I had my zoom lens, but that's not the point - the good old biker boys let us get close without any problems!? As a result, the images I got I'm not terribly impressed with at all :(

As I didn't get shots I wanted to use and the theme was NUMBERS, I hope you like what I have in store for you - eyes down...

Not many weeks left of this project, and only days until I move to Brighton!!!! The Oxjam gig was successful with the highest traffic we have had to our website, so if you havent checked out the pics you really should.

Lately I have been taking quite a few shots of the trees as they continue to change colour and not quite focussed on a theme as such, just snapping away at what caught me eye.

So, I went back to my list and chose 'Abstract' as my theme. Then having looked through my many collections and image stored away for a rainy day, I chose the images I think fit nicely as abstract images.

I'm a big fan of 'working smarter not harder', so for this weeks theme I combined an event with my 52 week project, the theme: MUSIC.

The photoshoot was in Leicester and organised by Oxjam. They were hosting a music festival on Braunstone Gate for the whole day. It involved 8 bars and nearly 80 artists of all kinds of music genres. I'm sure you're dying to know what Oxjam is. It's a music festival that is happening all over the UK - not only to promote Oxfam and raise money for charity but also as a platform for music artists - two key reasons I was keen to get involved.

Adam and I went to the Independent Arts Centre in Leicester for Friday nights gigs. It a nice sized art house, which has a stage set up at the back for musicians. The artists themselves were good, but sadly the turnout was poor. However, Saturday was the main event so it was a nice warm up.

Saturday arrived, the weather looked hmmmm - changeable. 1pm rolled around and kick off time! When I arrived at the O'Bar the place was packed and rocking as music filled the room, as some great musicians were giving so much energy to their performance, a fantastic start and set the tone. The challenge for me this time round was that I have never photographed music events before, and to make it even more challenging, the musicians were playing in eight very different venues, with a mix of lighting conditions and space. One thing I wanted to do where possible was catch the action and also the ambience, but still get nice crisp images, no easy task for a novice like me.

In order to see and hear the bands playing live, you bought a wristband to gain entry to The Looking Glass, Loaf, O' Bar, Sumo, Natterjacks, The Hub, Venus and The Bowstring bars. Not only were the bars full, but there was plenty more merriment to be had in the street, with Capoeira, a Caribbean Carnival, Fire Poi, Graffiti artists and even Vikings?!?! (Yeah, I didn't get that one either).

To top it all off, I also got to see an old friend playing and he blew me away with how well he has done - if you haven't heard of him yet you will, allow me to introduce THE JAMES LEWIS BAND, you heard it here first folks! One of my fav songs so far is Kathryn, go check it out or why not buy it from iTunes. One trait which drove me crazy was the fact that about 90% of the musicians sang with their eyes closed - it looked like I caught every one of them blinking - which is typically what I try to avoid, having said that, it does work well on some images.

It was a fantastic, tiring, ear popping, head banging, foot tapping day! I would like to thank Adam Breedon and Oxjam for getting us involved and a big shout out to all the musicians and performers who did themselves and Leicester proud by raising £1000s for charity ;)

Not many more weeks left of this challenge and boy has it been harder than I imagined. Having said that though I have learnt a lot more, slowed down, worked on my composition and started to train my eye - so it has been a very worthwhile venture.

So from my time in Brighton I have managed to catch up on my weeks finally. I chose BIRDS and TRANSPORT as my themes. There were of course many shots which didn't make the grade but also from the ones I did take, and preferred, it became hard to choose a worthy winner. Anyway I finally decided which I liked the most as you can see below.

I really needed to get away, lots of things getting on top of me and certain people taking the opportunity to kick me whilst I was down, so I headed south to Brighton for a while.

Maybe its the sea air, the change of scenery or the company, but it felt better. As long as I can quieten the voices I'm OK.

Whilst in Brighton, I tried to focus more on my photography and keep active. Luckily there was a motor bike rally, so loads to see and do. It also gave me a chance to catch up on my 52, as I got candid shots and some specific images in one go.

I tried to get a wide variety of images, people, bikes, boats, cars, animals, landscapes - more for practise than anything else. I stood on the top of the promenade and shot down into the vast crowds trying to pick out interesting characters. I did manage to get some, but the one thing that was all too clear was how poor my 'cheap' lens is. I really need to replace this with a better one. I also want to upgrade my camera too as I think I have out grown this one, I will ask Santa really nicely ;)

As for the shots I'm happy with them, nice mix, good feel them I think. As yet I haven't chosen a winner, so feel free to offer your suggestions as to which deserves to be chosen and why.

Week 38 - CANDID

Hello darkness my old friend

The weather today looks as miserable as I feel and have being for quite sometime.
I came back to the UK to sort of out a life for me and my family, only to have that taken away again, regardless of the effort I had put in. It seems no matter how hard you try for some people it will never be enough. I'm angry with some of the choices that I made but they were at least my choices, but now I need to learn to make the right choices in order to move forward. Since the split I have had some very dark days and a few wobbles, some more serious than others and after several looooong chats with some friends I know Telford at least, isn't going to give me what I want and need. I also need to seek professional help as it's thought I have a bi-polar spectrum disorder.

I have decided that I'm off women too. No, I haven't changed sides, regardless of what some people may think already. I just need much more time to sort myself out - with that in mind I am going to move away for a year. I will still pursue my photography as I really enjoy it and believe there can be a future in it. But I haven't learnt as much as I expected here, so more effort and more like minded people to grow and learn from required.

I feel that I have let some people down but sadly the state I'm in is not good and I cannot offer them what they want or need right now, giving myself time and space will hopefully fix that. Newdawn still exists and for now I will be behind the scenes more and Huss will take the reigns. So if I go quiet for a while, like I have been, don't worry I'm just trying to get my life back in order again, no matter what they say it doesn't get any easier.

Week 36 & 37 of 52

Well this one was the toughest weeks yet. Not in terms of subject matter, more the fact that my life was turned upside down with my long term girlfriend and I splitting up :(

I have so many things to say but better I say nothing, my mouth tends to get me into trouble - my head however is a mess, my heart destroyed! I wish I had a magic wand to fix everything but that wont work if only one person wants it, no matter how hard you wish - I learnt that before. So I needed space and some friends offered me some places to crash, but I dont like imposing, never have, but thank you for the offers folks. I did disappear to Brighton for a few days though - very cool place, kinda reminded me of Camden town, cool, funky, arty place.

Anyway now I'm left with the decision as to where my life is going next - currently, no where fast, being refused jobs left right and centre, besides my intention was to return here and run my own business, and that already has become a costly choice, so silly to leave it now.

I just want to thank the friends who were there and who offered support. Once I have my mojo back, watch out world!!!

The hunter and the bear

This is worthy of a mention, clever advertising on behalf of Tipp-ex.

Simple short film of a hunter and a bear and the joyous wonders they share together. At the end of the video you given an option choose either. You are then presented with ANY option you can think of to rewrite the story.

The Hunter uses the Tipp-ex to allow you to type any word in, and a short video plays using your chosen word, try it - but be aware you may not stop and you will laugh out loud, so dont do it at work!!

Week 35 of 52

Autumn has arrived and in order to mark this the chosen subject for this week is AUTUMN.

Whilst heading off on this journey I had a good idea of where I wanted to go, as I hung out there as a kid. 20 years later though, much had changed. My old infant and junior schools have been demolished and replaced with a housing estate! In fact the whole area has changed quite a bit. There used to be an old tree at the bottom of the school fields, that has been removed. That tree was like a perished fossil of what used to be. The rumours were it had been struck by lighting and died on that very day - it was old, twisted and so iconic, we used to say that at Halloween ghosts would haunt it. It really did look like a hanged mans tree.

So a quick trip up to the Wrekin and the Ercall supplied me with plenty of opportunities for subject matter. There was a chance to catch three young deer but sadly they saw me before I saw them and they ran off into the distance. Anyway, I headed up into the woods taking shots of the various fields and animals as I went. Music playing in my ears, camera in hand, wind in my face, I trudged on. When I arrived at the base of the woods, my intention was to get lost - that way I get off the beaten track and hopefully find something more unusual than that you find along the footpath.

The colours of the trees are starting to change and perhaps I'm a little early as there is still more greens than browns around. Still it was nice to get out and stretch my legs get some fresh air. One thing I really enjoy about photography is it quietens my crazy head and gives me focus if only for a little while.

Whilst experimenting and taking pictures using our Hi-lite background I struck upon an idea for my next 52 project. As the theme is POSED, what better than me posing, but not just a pose or two, oh no, that's way too easy. I want 100 different poses!!!

So I got to work thinking about what faces, expressions and emotions I could use. I decided for this project I didn't want to use props, like hats etc (i have enough of them), instead only use my face and hands, that should offer enough variety. I then began by going through the usual emotions - happy, sad, grumpy, sneezy, sleepy - yes, I did use the 7 dwarves as a reference point. Then I got a little more creative and started working on a flow from one image to the next. I also decided to use movies, music and whatever I could think of for inspiration as well as using my own many crazy faces.

I was lucky enough that Hussian was available to take the actual shots, which saved me running backwards and forwards to the camera. So we set up what we needed and began snapping away. Huss added in ideas as we went along which kept the project alive and fun, amidst the laughter and frivolity we did manage to get plenty of shots. We then got to a point where both our minds went blank (no smart comments) we called it a day, with around 140 images in the bag. Typical, that once we had finished and packed everything away I suddenly thought of maybe 20 more options, maybe for another day?

Anyway, as I have 100 images I wont be uploading them all. Instead, you will see the finished project below.

Week 34 - POSED

I'm always keen to learn new things and push myself in some way. Typically it's in a creative role or experimenting in something 'free'. I don't work well with constraints and rules so much ;)
That's not to say I'm lazy, but I do prefer practise to theory and rarely read manuals.

I do love watching the likes of Gok Wan and especially his approach to 'natural women' and 'looking good naked'. The way he approaches the subject and people, what he accomplishes in a short time period and the shift in attitudes, all very clever and effective.

One thing he does, is he forces people to see themselves as they really are, and then learn to be comfortable with that realisation. Having clients in front of the camera is very similar, in so-much-as most people don't like having their photo taken for a multitude of reasons. Your comfort is key to me and I want to get you as comfortable as possible with the camera, so I can get those wonderful shots.

I know its hard to relax and you judge yourselves, because I do it too. I'm not handsome, I have moles, I don't like my teeth, but that aside, I have a fun-loving personality as you will see in the next post, or a sneak peek can be seen by going to the newdawn photography site, and this is what I want to capture on camera, not your imperfections.

For those of you that know me, know I am tactile, crazy and emotive. This is carried over into my photography, I like to get a feel for the shots, my subjects to have fun, enjoy it and keep it fresh and organic. When I'm out on a photo-shoot I'm always looking for a WOW image, that one shot that really stands out, where all the pieces of the jigsaw fall into place; the location, the light, the subject, the expression, the angle etc.

So in my portfolio, I'm currently looking for boundaries to be pushed, creativity to flow and I'm experimenting in lots of different ways. I would like to get to shoot some extreme models and I would love to do a vintage photo-shoot at a 1950's train station, so if you're available or know of anyone, point them my way, or if you happen to know of a great location, email me ;)

Week 33 of 52

This weeks theme presented a new challenge for me, each week is a challenge in its own right but this one was special. The theme was OBJECT, and to make it tougher I decided I could only use one object. Typically I go out and shoot several variations on the theme and get something I like from one shot or another. This time however having only one object to shoot made me have to be more creative with what little I had!

I wanted something I could do a variety of shots and angles with, and my love for colour was also a factor, so I thought about using a slinky!

When I was in Spain I looked for one, but no one really knew what I was after - they just laughed at the crazy English man. Being back in the UK, a quick trip to the toy store and a pound later I had what I needed. But rather than simply shooting the slinky I played with it a little and worked the abstract nature of it more, as I felt it made for more interesting images.

I must say, I tip my hat to all those who complete a 365 challenge (photo a day). Having been busy with many other things I have not kept on top of my 52 challenge as I would like. Right now there is so much going on, yet at the same time nothing! Do you ever have those moments?

Anyway these are the latest offerings I have. For week 31, I had RAILWAY as the theme. I went down to a local train station and took some shots, but was not inspired. So I went on to another station, but still nothing excited me. Then on a quick day trip we came across a cool Olde Worlde train station, so I quickly snapped away.

Feeling much happier with the results from this occasion, I was able to complete this weeks challenge and breathe a sigh of relief. Rather than just one image I ended up with two I really liked, but, there can be only one!

Week 31 - RAILWAY

This weeks challenge, (which now brings me up-to-date) is SCENIC. Again whilst out and about with a friend I managed to get what I needed for this particular challenge and some additional shots should I want to use them another time or for other things. Sadly my battery died and that ended the shoot, what I didn't realise until I arrived back home is I had my spare battery with me all along. The weather was nice which was great considering how awful it has been. It was also good to get away if only briefly, fresh air does help clear the mind ;)

Week 29 & 30 of 52

I know, I know I'm really falling behind! I have being trying to keep up with everything but sadly not got the motivation I need, I think the weather is partly to blame.

My week 29's theme is Summer, but I'm struggling to find anything 'summery', in fact, little except rain! Sandra is online showing me her tan and here in the UK all I have to show is a cold, so not fair!

Being back is not what I thought it was going to be, for reasons I won't go in to. But someone is determined to make my situation harder than it need be. Not being able to move forward in my life is perhaps what's holding me back in my photography as I just aren't as inspired as I have been. This MUST be resolved one way or another, luckily I have Sandra and some friends who have helped keep me sane (no easy task).

So I finally did get round to posting the images, they were already shot, I was simply unhappy with them as they didn't convey what I wanted or were of a quality I would like.

Week 29 - SUMMER

Be afraid, be VERY afraid, as the theme for Week 30 is Fear! This one was a little better because fear is pretty abstract. It started with a few simple questions: what do people fear? What am I afraid of? What's the biggest fear in the world? Then going to create an image that would embody those answers.

Heights, spiders, public speaking and clowns!!! But maybe the sight of those things would be too fearful for my audience?!?
So a quick re-think. Its fair to say most people fear death - they sure dont welcome it anyway. The internet and technology is another big fear, so armed with these new ideas I set about creating my week's images.
It certainly did get me being creative again as the winner of this week will show you.

Week 30 - FEAR

The mouse is dead!

For years now we having been using mice to navigate around our computer screens. Typically having to replace them maybe once a year or more often in some cases. The first mice were constantly getting gunk trapped on the wheels as you then removed the ball inside to clean them.

Then came optical mice, great no more messy ball and clean scrolling, perfect. But wait, not so great as it all depended on what surface you used, as reflective surfaces or glass didnt work so well, and you were always limited by the cable, so along came the wireless mouse.

Step by step the mouse has improved but not much. Then came along Apple's Magic mouse they had cracked it, I thought. A nice touch sensitive mouse, but Apple being Apple didnt stop there, oh no!!!!

Now they have released the replacement of the mouse forever, thats right!!! BEHOLD THE MAGIC TRACKPAD. OK the name sucks, im sure they could have done better, but its genius!

It looks the part and it does exactly what the trackpad does on all good Macbooks and is so simple to use. You can single click, double click, use two-finger scrolling, pinch to zoom, rotate with your fingertips, three-finger swipe, and activate Exposé or switch between applications with four fingers. Lets see the mouse bounce back from that. Long live the track pad ;)

To make or not remake

So I have just watched The Karate Kid and The A-Team, both blasts from the past and remakes.

So what did I think? For me, The Karate Kid just didn't work this time round. I never connected with the characters or felt the plight of Jaden Smith as I did with poor Danielsan. Jackie Chan playing the mild mannered Janitor (aka Mr Miyagi) was OK and given Jackie's skill it was good to see some of it back in action without the Hollywood glam.

The reality is this film was Jaden's showcase, no more no less. He is talented, he has the mannerisms of his father and Im sure has a promising career as he can act. But the film being a remake just didn't work to my mind - the fact it's 'The Karate Kid' and they openly keep saying he's being taught Kung Fu seems ludicrous, its a typical storyline and they could have simply adapted it.

On a positive note - I did enjoy the part at the temple, where you got to see some classic Kung Fu, including a cameo of Michelle Yeoh and a cobra training (Kobra Kai reference??)

It took too long to establish characters and get the film moving at a suitable pace - one part of any movie that typically gets me going is that: pick yourself up and train moment, you know the kind like they have in the Rocky films - where Adrian says "win Rocky, Win!" the music builds and he goes on a training rampage with montage shots. Sadly in this movie (although I did like the shadow puppet Kung Fu training) it didn't stir me at all :(

On the other hand, The A-Team, this was pretty cool. My expectations were low and I wasn't really feeling Liam Neeson as Hannibal but the film itself worked. Nothing amazing just enough cheese, adrenaline rushed, bullet flying, weak plot twisting to keep me watching.

The first 45 mins were good, I liked the setup, the pace dropped somewhat, but overall it was watchable - and to be honest right now from Hollywood I expect little else.

Murdock for me made the film, just the right amount of crazy and great line delivery.

The plot was thin, riddled with mistakes and they did the cheesy building stuff from nothing - all what you expect from this film, nothing more or less ;)

Week 28 - Sweet

I thought this would be easy, go the shop buy a few sweets and snap away. Thats what I did, I also didn't much like the results. I played with a few ideas and considered a few options - I tried to get arty, but weren't happy with the images, tried being clever but didn't have the skill to pull it off, tried shouting at the products; that didn't help either :-S

Anyway I cracked on and took the following shots I was at least OK with. Jelly Babies are no longer the cool looking sweets they used to be - bring back the original Jelly Babies!

OK, so it was an excuse to grab some sweeties, but my creative edge was evading me and I wasn't happy with much I set up. I did try catching an M&M bouncing but couldn't get a shot I was happy with :(

Week 28: SWEET

As you would have previously read, I had to take a trip to London to see my ladies back off to Spain. Whilst there I had a quick look around for inspiration. The place is bursting with opportunities for photography everywhere you look.

My theme for the week was Authority so I had to choose my shots, but I captured the typical images of London too, and why not. It was great to be back in London, far more interesting than I recalled.

I decided against going for the obvious authority figures being Police officers, mainly because the issue they typically have with photographers, plus they were armed!
The soldiers looked splendid and were happy to pose, well I say that, they had no choice as they couldn't move. The poor guys must feel like chimps in a zoo with everyone wanted to be near them and photograph them. Still they do make great shots.

Oh I nearly forgot to mention, an image of mine (flaming shot) has been used by a American rock group - now thats Rock 'n' Roll. ;)

Week 27: AUTHORITY

Gone but not forgotten

Sandra and Pitu returned to Spain again today :'(

Hopefully though the next time I see them we should be together for good. It does mean I have my work cut out though: house, job, income, security, stability and need to be sorted within a few months, no pressure then.

Today was Sandra's birthday (I wont say how old she is, but welcome to the club), not sure if it was a good gift to be leaving the UK or not?! It was really nice to see them again and have the support around. Pitu is rapidly growing and speaking more Spanish than I understand, grrrrr. But she is very funny, dont know where she gets that from? Pitu is so lucky, she has been on a plane, many trains, and to another country and she's not even two, I was over 20 when I first went abroad.

The trip to and from the airport were long and sweaty ones, yuck!!! I did forget though just how much I liked London though for the sheer variety of... ...well everything. Yes its crowded and bustling, the tubes are crammed and its expensive but it is such a cool place to just BE.

Sandra was keen to go sight-seeing so we did that and she was like a Japanese tourist (no offence meant to Japanese tourists, but you know what I mean) - so funny, of course I took my turn to grab a few shots too - there are SO many photo opportunities in London.

Sadly with all the excitement of Sandra coming over I forgot to do something really important, oops!!!

That may come back to haunt me later. Hey ho, I have more than enough things to worry about and organise as it is.

Week 24, 25 & 26

As I'm sure you are aware, I have slipped slightly with my 52. I have been taking shots but nothing I was happy with, although I have been ensured they were of suitable quality I just weren't liking them, partly because my heart was not in it.

I have a too many trails and tribulations to deal with currently and as a consequence I was unable to do anything. So I have resigned myself to focusing on one thing at a time and only dealing with other things when I am in a position to do so; thanks to family and friends for the advice and support.

I am now feeling much better about moving forward and have revisited my shots and worked with the ones I thought had some merit.

Week 24's theme was: Historic. So I went over to Shrewsbury as it is steeped in history and has a castle of its own to photograph. The day was very nice and it was good to see that Shrewsbury hadn't lost its charm. Although the cost of the rail fair did put me off somewhat.

Week 24: HISTORIC

For Week 25, I chose wedding details as I hadn't shot a complete wedding and this was my task for the wedding along with co-ordinating and taking candid images. Huss taken care of the formal and group images. It was a splendid day and one I am very pleased to have been apart of.

We have a wide choice of images and selecting the ones for my 52 was tough so I don't envy the bride trying to decide which images she wants to keep.

Week 25: WEDDING DETAILS

AND FINALLY..... ..The half way point, Week 26.

I wasn't sure I was going to be able to get this far to be honest, but I have made it and it was no easy task I can tell you. So far I have had a wide mix of style and types of shots along with a wide variety of subjects. I am pleased to say I can see a progression in my photography looking back, although i need a little more thought into my creative shots as they had slipped away.

So what could I do for this week, well I need to be able to work in daylight, with and without flash so that's what I did. In order to understand and use it better I asked Sandra if she would mind being my next top model and we headed off to a park which would be great for wedding and portrait shots.

I got here to pose and dropped in flash where needed as the midday sun was strong and high in the sky. I played with direction, poses and angles and I am happy with the outcome to be honest.

Stuff and Nonsense

I know I'm behind on my 52, dont worry I will catch up, I'm almost at the half way point and it would be foolish to fail now, but my mojo is lacking big time!

I took a trip to Shrewsbury, which cost far more than I recall, nearly £10 for a return ticket to somewhere which is 10 miles away. I was amazed it costs so much, hardly surprising more people wont give up their cars when the rail networks charge such ridiculous prices. More of the same can be seen when I came to check tickets to pick up Sandra and Pitu from the airport, if you book way in advance you pay £28 but close to or on the day you could end up paying from £58 to £150!!! Really it would be cheaper to hire a car and have less of the hassle of charging trains, missing connections and struggling up and down stairs with suitcases.

Anyhoo, Pitu and Sandra have arrived and I will no doubt be busy with them for a while as they are visiting for 10 days before they return to Spain. The weather so far has been good, lets hope it remains that way.

Hussian and I shot a wedding recently, I was there as backup and Hussian did the work, I simply helped out and caught some candid shots; great practise for me. As far as the business goes, its a slow uphill struggle, but headway is being made. Looks like a while before we will have a studio though.

I have managed to speak with China on Facebook and sadly it's all I can manage at this point, I hope to have this resolved soon too; lots of work to be done!

Week 23 of 52

Trying to squeeze this project in amongst other things is not easy. I cant seem to find my mojo :(

Although I have been working hard at getting the Newdawn website up and running and getting all the required information within the site, current. For 2 days running I went to sleep at gone 4am trying to fix something I knew could be done, even though forums were saying otherwise. But I did it, time well spent; I don't like to fail!

I am still finding it difficult to have access to see China, although I did get to chat with her on FB, but now that too seems to have caused problems. I have been keeping in touch with Sandra and we are both finding it harder than we thought we would (at least I am).

For a while, due to pressures, I have not been the best I could be to her and this must change in order to have a future together - I have made that commitment.

Hopefully it wont be too long now and they can join me here - hopefully with a flourishing business.

Well as the theme this week is 'industrial' where better to go than the birth place of the industrial revolution - The Ironbridge Gorge. Sadly I picked the wrong day as it rained constantly, (you know the kind, the one that gets you wet) not great.

I did manage to get some shots in, although to be honest I'm not impressed with my shots of the bridge, in particular. Perhaps it was the weather, but they just don't work as I would have liked, anyhoo...

Having been busy beavering away on the business side of things and trying to sort some personal matters my photography has took a hit of late. So I was keen to get my mojo back and do something more interesting and engaging.

I had bought a light tent some time back and still hadn't gotten around to using it, we needed some commercial shots for the website, we want some hi-key shots and I needed a challenge, so with all that in mind I went down to the supermarket and bought some fruit and veg and got creative.

Luckily Hussian was available and came round to help me with the shots - his understanding of lighting helped immensely. So we got cracking and tried a variety of shots using a mix of fruits.

All in all I am very happy with the images and hope that I can get back on course with my project.

Week 22 - HI-KEY

Being back in my old neck of the woods, felt familiar but also very different. Looking around I could see so much had changed, and not for the better. My old playing field was now a car park, my old stomping ground for exploring and climbing trees etc was now a housing estate.

The town centre shops had been replaced with pound stores, cash converters and charity shops, you can tell its a bad economy when even half the pubs have closed!

This didn't instill much confidence in me for our business venture, the one thing it did tell me is our advertising has to go further a field to be successful.

Its hard not having Sandra and Pitu at my side, having that support and assistance to keep me on track. The weather has been nice recently, but I'm lacking the drive to make the most of it, not feeling inspired much at all. I think this is just a dark cloud over me at the moment and looking for that ray of light.

The business side is forging ahead, Hussian and I have a clear direction and a few ideas in the bag.

So given the above and my state of mind, my 52 is obviously struggling as a consequence. I don't feel this does my photography much justice and I know I can do better. After spending a while in the local woodland and around the Wrekin, this is what I have to show.

Week 21- FLORA & FAUNA

Stepping stones

Things have been moving along quite nicely with Newdawn-Photography. Over the past week, I have kept myself busy by designing the brand, the blog and general design for website, and I must say I'm very happy so far.

Huss has given guidance and input to help refine the ideas, which is where we compliment each other so well. We have ensured all our paperwork is current and details correct. The next step is the business bank account and then looking into basic book keeping courses.

The business cards have been designed and awaiting delivery; (see above) this is the details side, on the reverse we will have our images of portraits, weddings or products.

All the usual social networks group accounts have been made and linked accordingly as well as working on the blog; of course all this is the behind the scenes stuff for Newdawn-Photography.

On top of all that we have done a small marketing campaign, which has generated quite a bit of interest, securing us some weddings. We did have a query about adult photography, but not an area we wish to explore, right now ;)

We are aiming for the full launch of Newdawn-Photography by the end of the month all being well.

As for my housing situation, thats a REALLY slow process and not much headway being made at all.

Missing Sandra and Pitu and even though we have Skype (and a bad webcam) its just not the same, I'm sure me being away for so long is taking its toll on them too, afterall whats not to love ;)

And so it starts

On Saturday Hussian and I did our first 'proper' photo shoot together, for clients!
It was a family with 2 boys. As we are also shooting their wedding there was added pressure to do well. Hussian took the lead on this venture for 2 reasons, first off he knew the couple already and second he had the better equipment using the Canon 7D rather than my Canon 450D (his is a better camera, and one I'm keen to get) that said I take nothing away from Hussian's shots.

The setup was a little more involved that I would have liked for the shoot, but I think that's because I'm more used to natural light shots and good old England decided to rain so that option was out. Meaning we needed to setup up an in-house studio and lighting. Luckily the family were easy going and understood what we were trying to achieve with the shots.

As Hussian was focussed on the photography I worked on the refining, angles, shapes and small details - just as important to any shot, surprising what a big difference it makes.

The boys, well were boys and did themselves proud. We had a nice mixed variety of shots, but it was obvious the novelty wears off quick, so working fast is key. I think we handled the kids well, giving them things to do and being very interactive with them.

I am looking forward to the wedding and I can see Nic (the wife-to-be) will make a beautiful bride. I am under no illusions however just how much work is involved in it.
In order to do the best I can I have been training myself and learning as much as possible about posing, positions and layouts which no doubt will show itself in my upcoming photos.

As for New Dawn Photography the company, headway is being made and within the month aim to have the website, photos and other bits and pieces in place for you to contact us through or simply follow our progress.

After all my recent exploits I did manage to actually continue shooting for my 52 project!

Some I had already in the bag, from just before I left Spain and some I captured here in England. Whilst out and about on my travels with Hussian, we came across a wonderful skull of what looked like a badgers.

So we set about lighting it from various angles and shooting away, as I knew the kind of shot I wanted I stuck with the natural light setup and opted for Black and White post processing to fit my weeks theme.
We shot some horses, not literally of course, some nature shots and I also got to try out the 7D (my next camera) and boy what a difference; makes mine feel like a toy :(

Whilst taking my shots not only am I looking for interest but also what would appeal to peoples imagination, get them to stop for a while, examine the image closer.
The way I'm approaching this is what makes me stop and look, or better yet, look again.
What makes me curious and cries out for closer inspection. What shapes catch my eye and how do they lend themselves to the image.

The skull whilst grizzly and nasty is also interesting, as are the shapes which were simply a square grill outside a police station, but the way the sun was forming alternate shapes, changing squares into pyramids made me stop and capture it, and it does play with my eyes and perception of what it is and what the shapes are, squares or triangles?

WEEK 20 - BLACK & WHITE

The road is long...

Well its been a busy week! The flight was delayed, the train was expensive, the trip was long and the week rather lonely.

Hussian has been a great help and support, which is really nice, dont think I could have coped without it - first plane back was tempting. I met up with some past friends and was glad to see that apart from balding heads not much else had changed about them. We reminisced for a while, then time was cracking on so we all went our seperate ways, but will keep much more in contact now than we had done.

In the course of moving here I have managed to sprain my wrist which is not nice, and picking up the simplest of things makes my wince like a girl.
I have managed to get some photography done with Hussian, which was nice, and we have a photo shoot on Saturday. I don't want to be bogged down with a job I don't want, but I understand it may be a necessary evil. In order to avoid that I want to crack on with the business I have in mind, and now I have the net sorted this will help immensely.

I have already been accosted by my past hauntings demanding things from and of me; which I'm sorry to say, they are not important at this stage and will have to wait until I'm on my feet, before I even consider responding to them.

Its my birthday today and very quiet lonely day its been. Hussian and i went out for a bit and chatted about business. I got bought a bottle of whiskey but after my last bottle I think best left alone :-S

I dont recall how old I am, but I must be close to thirty by now!?

One thing that was nice was finally getting back online and seeing all those Facebook messages and well wishes from friends all over the globe ;)

I also got to have a Skype video chat with Pitu and Sandra which was really nice but at the same time hard.

Week 18 & 19

As my flight had gotten cancelled and I was in Madrid, I thought I may as well make the most of it. So armed with my trusty camera I went on a mission to capture buildings and monuments for the next two week's challenges.

One of the most famous buildings in Madrid is Plaza de Toros, Las Ventas (the bullring). Now I'm not a fan of bullfighting so I never went inside although I do hear it is quite impressive, the bullring that is not the fighting. Bulfighting is still popular here in Spain, although it is losing favour; especially with the younger crowd.

Churches are also very common in Spain and each town or village will lay claim that their church is the most important in the area. You really can throw a stick and hit a church in most places (please do NOT go around throwing sticks at churches!)

Madrid does have some wonderful architecture in and around it - I could probably fill a month with different shots of weird and wonderful buildings.
On the way home we found some abandoned buildings so they got in on the act too.

WEEK 18 - BUILDINGS

At this point I am going to get a week ahead of myself, as I should be back in the UK when this week is due to be done and I still don't know about internet connections there.
So as for week 19, sculptures were the subjects.

Looking for interesting statues is not difficult they too are everywhere as are the many fountains. Spain is a great place to capture on film. What I tried to do with this subject was to capture what encapsulated Spain: religion, pilgrims, and or course bulls.

This helped me keep a clear view of what I was looking for, rather than just random statues.

Hey folks just want to give you a heads up. If you are shipping large items (ie suitcases) back to UK from your destination or even within the UK I can highly recommend FREIGHTQUOTE.

I checked out several options due to the fact my case was too heavy to allow on the flight with Easyjet or Ryanair. So I sought out other options, after choosing one I thought was OK a little researched proved invaluable as they feedbacks were awful. I then looked around for alternatives and found freightquote.

The service was simple to use, highly professional, in fact whilst I was filling in the form they rang me to see if they could assist further! I had one operative that worked with me from start to finish; which was nice rather than being passed around. I had one hiccup a shipping document they sent via email didnt arrive? But when I contacted they immediately resolved this and the shipment went ahead.

The price was acceptable and package arrived to UK with no problems in only 5 days - given the fact no one could fly for nearly a week I was surprised!!!

I know it is easy to say negative things about a company but when they do well they should also be praised - so a big thumbs up from me for FREIGHTQUOTE.

Lost in transit

So I was due to be returning to the UK, today. Notice the word 'was'!
Due to eruption of Eyjafjallajokull volcano in Iceland, I and 149,999 other Britons are stranded in and around Spain and neighbouring countries.

There has been a no-fly ban for the past 5 days and promises that at any minute it will be lifted and normal flights resumed. Obviously this is not the case.

Aid was due to be coming from the UK in way of HMS Navy ships, 4 of them. However one of them picked up UK soldiers and left, as for the others they have been sent to 'undisclosed ports', so much for the UK helping its citizens!!

In fact had it not been for SKY News I would be pretty much in the dark as to what was going on, the airports staff claim they know nothing and can only give you the same information they have on their websites. They are unaware of where the coaches, ferries and trains can be taken, only to say that you have to make your own travel arrangements with them not the airport. Call me naive, but after all the natural and man made disasters we have had, shouldn't the aid be ready to go at a moments notice, then get it to the people that need it.

Not make the people have to fend for themselves, fearing or costing them far money than they have to spend unnecessarily.

It would make sense (and perhaps the problem) - for a help desk to be setup at the airport where people can book tickets or better, exchange their tickets, for alternate travel arrangements.

Then from the airport get on a coach to the train station or ferry port.

According to reports Gordon Brown and Mr Zapatero have been working together to help stranded people get home and are using Madrid airport as a 'hub' for them to make other arrangements, this is not true from what I saw.

Well I have re-booked my flight now for next Wednesday 28th the first available flight out!

I must say I am fortunate that I have Sandra and somewhere to go back to, had I given it all up to leave Spain I really would be stuck right now, like the MANY people I saw at the airport today. More could and should be done to help those that need it.

What annoys people the most is being treated like mushrooms, we know there is a problem and we can accept that, but aid should be more readily available.

Week 17 of 52

Having had the extra week to play with I took lots of images to remind me of Spain, as well as the wildlife shots I took. You see thinking ahead ;)

So this weeks theme is Up Close, so mainly close up and macro shots used here.

Speaking of small details, as I mentioned before a few small changes have been made to my photography website - now you can browse with the arrow keys and I have cleaned up the site a little more. I may still change the layout of the gallery for something more... ...interesting. I was tempted to add a slideshow (perhaps I still will) but I really want it clean, simple and user friendly.

I have also been working on designing and adding a watermark to my images, as someone suggested they are likely to be stolen or used without permission. I too believe they are now of a standard worth protecting. So please let me know what you think about the new watermark.
Whilst improving one site I started playing with my blog site as well. I have now unified the posts a little more; My ramblings & musings, Interesting info, My 52 project, Random stuff, hopefully this will help you navigate the posts a little better ;)

Having just watched the new keynote update due for the iPhone - Steve Jobs previewed HTML5 which will basically replace Flash (at least on the Mac front), so all those who are afraid to buy the iPad for fear your site wont show up, not long to wait now ;)
I must also add they really are setting the bar high for their mobile competitors, the iPhone now has multitasking.

On another note: it may turn out that I have even more time available in Spain, as a volcano has erupted and grounded all flights until further notice - initial feedback says until Monday others say for further week. My suitcase on the other hand finally got sent off, so that may arrive before I do!!

There was a small hiccup with the company, but that's sorted now (nothings ever simple).

Really you couldn't make this stuff up!

WEEK 17 - UP CLOSE

I managed to squeeze in another weeks project before I leave for the land of no internet.

Whilst out and about in Valladolid we went to a park and saw lots of wildlife, peacocks, birds and even red squirrels - thats a big thing in the UK the grey squirrel has almost eradicated the red squirrel.

So I snapped off some shots, quick tip small creatures move fast, be ready!!

Shooting in natural light and trying to find suitable shade yet still in shot of the creatures was my first challenge, then getting them close enough was my next, following that was dealing with the public that flocked around like pigeons fighting over crumbs of bread. My final challenge was looking for a good sharp shot, I had lots of blurred scurrying away shots, if anyone needs them let me know ;)

I have 2 favs of the shots I took one of the squirrel and one of the Great tit, on this occasion though Sandra and I differ on which shots are best, so at this point I dont have a fav to post to my website.

I have uploaded them to Flickr and which ever gets the most views/comments will get posted.

The waiting game

Its been a while since I stopped work and I'M BORED!!! I don't do bored well.

I have sorted out my flight and sourced a shipping company for my case, the one I was going to go with - I don't know something was amiss. So with the joys of internet I checked them out and I'm so glad I did, not one positive comment! Research people, it pays in the end.

That's not to say of course the company I have gone with is any better but I shall soon know.
What I will say is whilst I was online filling out the request shipping form I received a call, not initially recognising the name of the company I asked him to repeat where he was from, it turns out it was the company I was filling out the online form with (they are either VERY efficient or desperate!?).
Either way he was courteous and said he would call me back if he saw I was having any problems at all, now thats service.

One thing that drove me crazy is the UK for all its wonderful public transport systems doesnt seem to be user friendly in terms of purchasing suitable timed tickets or suitable connection from A to B.

The train ticket for example, I wanted to book it online so it was all taken care of.

Checked availability, good, checked times, good, checked prices, excellent (if booked early) all was going so well (which should have been a clue) - that was until I went to buy the ticket, I couldn't.

The system wouldn't accept a card outside of UK?! OK, plan B, use my mates card to buy the ticket, can't I have to have the card when collecting said ticket! WTF!?!?!

Seriously people you are destroying the tourism industry for people wanting to visit the UK.

I could book a coach, but it took 6 and half hours when the train too 2 and half - why it stopped over for 2 hours in Birmingham.

I couldn't get connections from certain airports and if I could the coach service only ran after 1 pm, I was due to arrive at 9am? I don't get it I just don't!

Now it seems I cant pre-book my train and will have to get my ticket when I arrive and pay 50 pounds instead of 10!

For now though it's a waiting game; waiting to be paid (tomorrow all being well), to have my suitcase picked up (Friday), to exchange my money (Monday), to fly 'home' (Tuesday) to arrive 'home' 2pm Tuesday.

To pass some time we went out and about to a park in Valladolid and I got to photography some wildlife there (Week 16) and we will spend a day or so in Madrid before I go to the airport for my early flight.

I know it sounds bad, but I don't like that 'limbo' feeling, I prefer to know where I am, what I'm doing and where I'm heading. Once back in the UK of course I have A LOT to sort and arrange there.

The aim is that Sandra and Pitu will join me in 6 months, so I have my work cut out - not only trying to secure work but also building a life and home for the to come to.

On a personal note I have been looking through my photos, and although I can still pick fault with them and still dont understand all I need to and I'm lacking some required skills, I am actually happy with my progress. I can actually see it; which is nice.

I have gone through my site and deleted 'filler' images and trying to maintain good solid images.

I still dont think I have a 'style' to speak of, or for that matter a preferred subject matter, and at this point I dont think I need to, how else will I find out what I like if I don't try all options.

But a years practise has indeed paid off. It will be interesting to see how much more improvement will be made by next year, having a colleague work along side of.

The sneaky SOB's in Government are rapidly pushing through a bill which could radically change the internet and freedom of information as it stands. Its called the ''Digital Economy Bill'' (could it sound any vaguer?)
And the clauses within this bill are even worse: clause 43 also introduces “Extended Collective Licensing”. This effectively means that anyone can use your photographs if they cannot 'find' you, does this mean ALL your work has to be watermarked or ran through some ownership process and by what means to they try to find the owners?
update: clause 43 has been removed. But that may not be the end of it as they inserted a modified clause 8: The new clause allows the secretary of state for business to order the blocking of "a location on the internet which the court is satisfied has been, is being or is likely to be used for or in connection with an activity that infringes copyright". So beware of what you say online!!!

Now dont get me wrong I'm actually in favour of the internet being policed to some degree - there is some really scary depraved sh*t out there. And also a lot of dead sites which no longer exist only to clog up the net space - surprisingly enough it is not infinite!

However my issue with this bill is its is being controlled by assholes who are not even in touch with the world outside their front door let alone a virtual one. Most MP's are old and dont get it anyway.
(now im not saying old people dont use/understand the internet, but in general it moves to fast for them to keep up with).
The reason for this bill is NOT to protect us, the public, but to protect big corporate businesses!
Obviously the record companies are backing this bill as it suits their own agendas, I wonder do the artist feel the same, I doubt it.
I prefer the approach Radiohead took when they released an album and said "pay us what you think its worth" - this is a free market and one I'm sure people will subscribe too.

There is always going to be piracy lets face it - can it be monitored and controlled sure to some degree, but even back in the 80's I was copying games on tape for my Spectrum and recording music off the radio - did it really hurt the big companies?!

To be honest I would prefer 'rip off Britain' stop taxing the hell out of everything we buy and let us have it at a reasonable tax free price - that will help.
I would prefer that they stop telling us how to live our lives and definitely stop eroding our civil liberties.

This is a dangerous road and one once travelled we will never return from.

Life moves at such a fast pace, if you dont stop and look around you just might miss it ;)

With that in mind my topic for this week was SPRING.

My flight back to UK is now in 10 days so I have more time than initially thought, so I could take a breath. Which also meant going and taking some photos - great way to relax

So off I went with Sandra and Pitu to see what Spring had to offer, sadly where I live in Spain there isnt much in terms of wildlife or flowers - sure there are some things, but not alot.

I also watched as the sun went down and tried to capture the moments as it did.

The problem I have coming up is my place in the UK doesn't have internet, so I need to find a way to access the net, or sadly you wont see more photos!

Im sure I will find a way, just may mean uploading 2 weeks at a time, but we shall see ;)

WEEK 15 - SPRING

Living la vida loca

Well my life here in Spain is very close to being at an end, so what did I learn?

Work - here in Spain work has gotten much harder to find, but I think thats a global thing TBH, however at this point they still need English teachers but I feel that will change with original language options appearing everywhere.

If possible dont pay 15% tax on your earnings, after paying that much for 3 years all I ever got back was 250 euros!!! Should have been nearer 2,000 euros.
If you have the chance to pay 7% take it and pay the difference at the end of the year. It isnt like the UK where they send you back the overpayment.

Holidays - Spain is full of holidays, global, national and regional. If they're not on holiday there is a good chance they are having a siesta. Either way the things you want at that time forget it, I always run out of milk or bread or something I need urgently just at siesta time; no, I never learnt or understood it. Most holidays are religious based and Spain has many saints. Some such as Semana Santa are great spectacles to behold, whereas others like the Tomatina are fun and San Fermines is plain crazy!!!!!

Food - the food here is good, to be honest. If you like fish and tomatoes I am sure you will love it here, as I cant eat either I had to dodge around certain foods. It is a nightmare for vegetarians and heaven forbid you have a more restricted diet (for whatever reason) - Spain doesn't get it, vegetarian to them simply means less meat!

Wine - they have some great wines here and for a country that drinks so often, they have a good approach to alcohol, unlike the UK's binge culture. They love to party and have a good time and ANY excuse is worth celebrating. However drink driving is still a huge issue here; for that matter driving in general is a huge issue here!! (they drive on the wrong side, I think thats the problem)

Family - Spaniards have great family bonds. They consider family to be very important and kids stay home until they are 30+. The Italians have this culture too, but the UK doesn't, we should adopt this more. Family is important - just a shame you cant pick your family ;)

Cost - Spain can be pretty expensive when you look around and consider prices, mainly games and electronic stuff, it is TOO expensive. But in general I found it cheap enough to live and not on par with France which is very expensive; for almost everything.

People - Spanish women are fiery and generally very attractive. Downside is they shout alot they call it 'talking', but really its SHOUTING!!!

Spain is very open and adjusts to new things quite quickly and as a country developing rapidly.

Sadly their bureaucracy side is still slow and behind the times.

Travel - Spain has some amazing places to visit and explore such as Granada, Seville, Barcelona, Asturias and a huge diverse mix of landscapes - great for a photographer.
It also has a good infrastructure for getting around the cities and countryside - but book in advance for tickets though. The one thing to watch for mainly in bigger cities is pickpockets and bag snatchers, we could pretend they dont exist but its not true - keep your eyes open and be street smart, do not walk around with a large map unfolded and a gormless look on your face.

Luckily now with cheap airlines there is little excuse not to visit Spain.

You wont regret it ;)

OK, I am falling behind with this project and still have a lot to do for my move so not sure if/when I will get more shots done. So to ensure I don't fall too far behind I have decided that this week I am playing a wildcard!

What does that mean? Well, I can use ANY photos I have taken since beginning my 52 week challenge that have not used in any other weeks sets.

I have taken lots of shots of many different things, some I submitted some I didn't for various reasons: not as strong as the ones I did submit or simply too similar; however still good photos in their own right.

In this set you will see an eclectic bunch of shots with no determined theme, but should still be enjoyable and interesting shots nonetheless.

WEEK 14 - WILDCARD

Life seems to have a habit of getting in the way, no more so than when you have things to do.

My subject for week 13 was Lunch Time, so I took the opportunity to find typical authentic Spanish cuisine and make myself varied lunches to enjoy and photograph.

I had three shots I really liked this week but the chosen one pipped it for me. Sandra also agreed it was a stronger shot.

Whilst on my last Vaughan program I went around collecting wine corks - I had an idea in mind for what I wanted to do, so collected them when possible and when I returned home played around with the ideas a bit more and below you can see the result, well worth it I think.
I am currently a week behind and will need to try to complete week 14 and 15 as soon as possible for within 2 weeks I will be back in the UK and will have no internet access, booooooo!

Tomorrow I go to collect my passport and whilst in Madrid I will try to take advantage of Sandra, Pitu and the Retiro park.

I also have a few shots I am happy with in the bag for upcoming weekly projects too.

WEEK 13 - LUNCH TIME

Moving, all the people moving

With Vaughan now finished time to look for new pastures.

We have moved out of our nice home and currently staying at Sandra's parents. Sandra and Pitu will stay here for about 6 months whilst I get a business and life together back in the UK, then they will come to join me. It will be hard not seeing Pitu and Sandra for all that time, but I know in the end it will be worth it - there is a lot to sort out.

I am excited about working with one of my best friends and the adventure that lies before me, but also aware that this is going to be a challenge and could well test of friendship to the limits.

I am sure however it can and will survive.

The reason I am sure of this is we both have very different strengths which will be invaluable in our photography business and also we know each so well.

Sadly I left my passport until the last minute to get renewed - but it is now in Madrid awaiting collection. However it is a holiday here in Spain; Semana Santa (Holy Week) so I cannot collect it until next week, without that I cannot book my flight ticket.

Sometimes it seems that Spain is permanently on holiday.

I am eager to return and get things going, but I also need to wrap things up here too.

After deciding all the things I 'need' to take leaving behind half of my clothes, I realised I was way over my weight allowance for any airlines! This means I will now have to send a suitcase alone with a courier service due to excess weight, at least it means I don't have to go without the things I want to take. I did offer to go naked to save weight but for some reason my friends on Facebook didn't like that idea!??

So within 2 weeks or so I will be back in UK - you have been warned!

Sands of time

This is without a doubt one of the best and most talented artists I have ever seen. Her work flowed perfectly, the music was fantastic and the emotional story shone through clearly.

Kseniya Simonova is a Ukrainian artist who just won Ukraine's version of "America's Got Talent".
She uses a giant light box, dramatic music, imagination and "sand painting" skills to interpret Germany's invasion and occupation of Ukraine during WWII.

Week 11 & 12 of 52

I fell behind on my project and never managed to get week 11 done before having to leave for 2 weeks, working away.

So whilst working I made some time to get my shots in and complete Week 11 and 12.

Although this brings me up to date Week 13 is due in 2 days!!!

No one said this was going to be easy and if they did, they lied.

So the topic I had for Week 11 was HEADSHOTS.
Luckily there were a lot of willing candidates for me to use at work, so I did - All of them were done using natural or ambient light - I left my flash in the bag, as I wanted to try to use the light around us more as a challenge.

I also tried to capture them in a variety of ways so all the poses don't look alike. The hard thing is for people to be natural knowing a camera is pointed right at them!

WEEK 11 - HEADSHOTS

Week 12's topic was THE GREAT OUTDOORS. I chose this due to my location, it was literally in the middle of nowhere, in fact the towns around us have been abandoned for many years!

The place was called Valdelavilla in Soria, Spain.
So I took the chance to go trekking and capture some shots I could use.

I must admit I forgot how tiring trekking was, and I now know just how unfit I am; puff pant!!!

Well it was worth it, I managed to get some nice shots and see some great views, strangely enough hardly any wildlife at all though!?

To be honest I was apprehensive about this week, for several reasons, it’s my last ever program, it’s a new venue (which typically means problems) and I had to get something off my chest. Having spoken with the person I needed to, I could put that finally to rest. As for the venue, I would have to deal with that once I was there and the problems too.

The tapas for me was awful. It is SO clear the manager does not want us there, and constantly turning up the volume to the football and whizzing around us clearing away stuff before we have finished our business.

Yet again Anglos missing at the tapas; which leaves the PD playing a guessing game as to whether we have enough Anglos or not. As it turned out we were two short, again! So for another week we had to double our own workload; not fair to us, the Anglos or the Spaniards, just because we cope doesn’t mean we should have to.

Well the journey – we left after 10am and got to the venue after 4pm – what a ride: it was like a magical mystery tour. The lunch was nice though, in a small little town.

As for the venue – talk about step back in time!!!
Extremely rustic village, quite quaint and is literally in the middle of no-where.
No mobile coverage and hardly any internet signal, and the little we had was being shared with 6 other laptops, in a makeshift internet cafe – I could have cried.

But it is a nice interesting venue, not sure I would want to do lots of programs there, but as this was my one and only it was a nice experience.

My room keeping to the rustic look and feel was ‘cottagey’ and the doorway was built for dwarves I guess?! I half expected to get inside and find 7 small beds!

I must say thought the food was fantastic, nice home cooked meals, good variety and excellent salads, bit of a change from last week! And the staff were warm, friendly and spoke English (to some degree).

The usual problems of course existed at the venue, such as: no pads, no pens, no paper, no projector, no access to music, limited computer access, printing issues – all very frustrating and simple to resolve issues, which always get overlooked.

In order to run an effective program you need access to materials and have the flexibility to adapt programs accordingly – I’m sure I’ve mentioned that before, haven’t I?!

The Quemada was good and enjoyed by all, and after we had an impromptu session of jokes from the group; now you know you’re doing well when Spaniards can tell jokes in English!

The entertainment sessions were fun as usual, on Wednesday Marisa managed to do a Cha Cha Cha dance class, which was a nice change and something everyone could be involved in. It did mean of course I first had to learn to dance, no mean feat (that’s feat not feet!), anyway I managed to get the routine down, but when everyone was there, boy did I feel the pressure!

There was no party, very quiet evenings and a very cosy meeting room, all in all very different to other venues indeed.

If you recall, I mentioned how small my door was, well, I managed to survive the whole week without hitting my head and wouldn’t you know just as I was checking out I cracked on the beam – OMG!!! I now have a mark across my head – some souvenir of my trip!

The program was great as were the people, they also wrote very nice messages in a card for me and I was given a Superman T-Shirt as a present.

The people make these programs not language, that simply brings them together – but it is those people I will miss most of all

So to you, the participants Anglo or Spaniard, I would like to thank you all for sharing your lives and your time with me and making my job worthwhile :)

Vaughan Town - Valdelavilla - Program 204

The beautiful people

This was my penultimate program and last week ever in Gredos. Next week I'm in Valdelavilla then I have finished my work with Vaughan Systems altogether!

The group this week was a small group, but great mix of people and personalities. This is without doubt what I will miss about no longer working in this field.

I was glad to see the weather held out for us. It was nice and sunny and not too cold; a little breezy occasionally. However, the folks were out and about enjoying themselves and the location.

Quemada was frightening - with Deanna really taking her role to heart, lol.

As usual I tried to use a lot of variety in the evenings and for the group activities and even though they are tough for some, the folks seemed to enjoy them. Although I could tell that by Wednesday they were tired; they had worked so hard ;)

Cheers to Beaver for sharing his excellent singing and guitar skills, and having the stamina to complete three weeks back to back :-S

The presentations were good and some exceptional ones; Iciar and Juan Carlos - well done indeed.

To the Masters I wish you all the best with your future, keep practising English.

To the rest of the Spaniards, keep up the English and good luck with where life takes you.

To the Anglos - thanks you all for your support, patience and enthusiasm.

The party of course rocked!! And I got a big thumbs up from Javier (a Spanish DJ, so it cant be bad)

Again at this point in the week everyone is relaxed and ready to let their hair down, as you can clearly see in the photos ;)

The only problem is my camera doesn't like to work like a point and shoot, and with the meeting room having very low ceilings, natural light, fluorescent light and tungsten light, it did make quite a challenge - I had to use on camera flash - which casts some awful shadows :(

This was also my last week working with Carmen - someone I will really miss working with.

Should you be lucky enough to meet her on your programs you will see what a sweet genuine person she is, she will help you with anything (except money and love)!

I decided this week to combine business with pleasure, as you know (if you follow my blog or website), I am doing a 52 week challenge - and being away from home for 2 weeks straight meant it would suffer. So to ensure that didn't happen, not only did I take my usual snapshots of the week, but I also managed to squeeze in some portraiture work; using only natural or ambient light.

The shots that I am most happy with (technically) will be used for my portfolio, if yours didn't make it - don't worry, you're still beautiful ;)

Vaughan Town - Gredos - Program 203

Week 10 of 52

It feels every time I post my 52 project I have excuses, but really, this has been a busy week.

Sorting out the house, building a website for my new venture (to be revealed), writing a business plan (for said venture) and trying to get to Madrid to sort my passport out before it expires and I become an illegal alien (speaking of aliens, I once convinced China I was an alien; but thats a story for another time). Sadly taking shots in Madrid was a wash out, as it rained constantly :(

Needless to say the photos were not high on my priorities - but I was still mindful of doing the shoot.

Due to mentioned restrictions it meant I didn't do as many versions of this style as I would have liked,

This weeks chosen topic was TRIPTYCH. What is a triptych, you ask - well its three pieces of work joined into one, that have a similar theme. I chose nature and what I could find, stone, bark and shells. I also had in mind a coffee version too (just love coffee).

Back to the 80's

Well it seems all the glitz and glamour of Hollywood has dried up and they have returned to the 80's for story lines. This year has been a wash out for blockbuster movies. So instead of trying to produce them they have decided simply to reinvent the past, with remakes of old 80's movies; and not just the good ones!

Nightmare on Elm Street - now Darker, moodier and probably better effects is all this will offer the viewer. It is the same story line; even wording. I for one love originals and this adds nothing new or interesting.

The Karate Kid - this again is Jackie Chan sadly trying hard to make the American market happy. In this remake of The Karate Kid he plays a janitor that trains a child who is in a country not his own and being bullied. Apart from the rubbish cliches, Jackie is teaching the child Kung Fu - but wait isnt it called The Karate Kid?? Small point overlooked! It is without a doubt a great show piece for the young Jaden Smith (Will Smith's son), but nothing new or challenging for Jackie; I miss the old Jackie Chan.

The A-Team - I love old school corn, and it gets no better than The A-Team. Is it worthy of a movie in its own right?? That remains to be seen. The cast look good - Liam Neeson as Hannibal; could be interesting. Looks a little Mission Impossible-ish, hopefully it will have a smattering of corn and not over-killed with effects.

They are also looking into the following, but not yet confirmed: Knight Rider, The Evil Dead, Conan the Barbarian, Akira, The Dirty Dozen, Death Wish and quite a few more; sadly.

To me this just shows the lack of vision Hollywood has. If a movie deserves a remake then I'm all for it, but to do it just to keep actors and studios in business is ridiculous.
Lets hope they NEVER make the life story of Timmy Mallet!!!

Week 8 & 9 of 52

I struggled to get the subjects I wanted for week 8 so it got delayed, but this week is double bubble - two weeks for the price of one.

So this week I was trying my hand at portraits and wanted some different subjects other than Sandra and Pitu; I think they're bored of being in front of my camera. I did try to do it all myself but it proved way too difficult, to set up, focus, click, edit position, click again etc etc. So I was glad when some friends offered to help out as models for me.

Having finally managed to get models I took them out to a location which was a nice setting, only to find out my cheap wireless triggers decided not to work!? - so I couldn't use my flashes the way I was hoping. So instead I made the best out off the situation and used the natural light, it was a little strong to be honest so I didn't get the effects I really wanted.

The annoying thing is back in the UK I have my Pocket Wizards (Poverty wizards or Pockets rinsers as they are known because they are so expensive) which would have done the job perfectly!

Oh well, live and learn.

Having watched quite a bit of material on photography I was keen to try a few different types of shots, again this proved harder than the pro's make it look.

I did take many shots but after a bit of editing I only chose a few; due to interest, lighting and the pose.

As for Week 9, I had odd one out as the subject, so lots of running around looking for similar yet different items to play with. This was easier as close up and macro I enjoy and I can manipulate the subjects without much effort, unlike people.

So after finding likely subjects it was onto the actual photography. I tried to be creative in the thought process to the shots and play with lighting and angles where possible.

Everybody was Kung fu fighting

When I was a little boy (all those years ago) back in the 80's, I was heavily into Martial Arts and I used to watch Martial Art movies all the time. But the one genre which rose above the rest and had SO many variations made were NINJA films. There were hundreds of them and there seemed no shortage of crappy storylines - as long as the word 'Ninja' appeared in the title and some guy was kicking and punching whilst wearing a black ninja suit it got made, and yet sadly, I must have seen nearly all of them.

Most of these were simply awful, but one guy stood out from the rest was Sho Kusugi.

The reason he stood out so much was he was a real life Ninja, playing a Ninja on film.

Pray for Death was one of his best. He did a few movies, some featuring his sons and then he seemed to disappear; as Ninjas do! That is until now.

I just watched Ninja Assassin (come on with a title like that who wouldn't) and low and behold Sho was the lead protagonist. A role he played well too I might add - as he's a typical hero type.

The plot as always was thin and typical revenge story line, no great dialogue and paper thin acting for some characters, but some great work did go into this, nice slow mo (ala Matrix stylie) and wickedly fast fight scenes, blood and gore, but more importantly was the little details so important to the mythology of Ninjas; things like the hand gestures, training and weaponry used.

I was happy to see Ninjas back on the big screen, when I say big screen I mean my TV screen of course. Then whilst chatting to Hussian he told me of a film about Yip Man (Ip Man).

Quick background, Yip Man was Bruce Lee's teacher and all round Chinese hero.

The lead was played by Donnie Yen, another talented martial artist, but I must say great work on this performance in the role. Nice pace to the movie, good background story, great martial arts, a little wire work and 'loosely' based on Yip's own lifestory, with a nod to Bruce Lee at the end.

Having had a little extra time this week, I must admit I never did put it to any real use. Rather than working hard on my photos I lost myself in a few TV series such as House MD, Modern Family and the odd episode of several others; lazy I know.
I did try some new ideas and shots; which really is the purpose behind this project. I also had some photos already in the bag for this one, so no real harm done.

This has been quite a week. I was going to have to post my week 7 early but it seems I have been given some extra time from work as Vaughan decided to let me know with 2 days notice they had taken me off my schedule and I wasn't working because they had received complains from the last program I did, 3 weeks back!? WTF?

Anyway I am tired of all the BS so I have officially resigned from Vaughan Systems, more on that later.

Lots of things to sort out for my future now. I am moving again; never do stay still for long, lol.

I am going to put my photography to use and try and go pro with it, maybe a little soon but needs must.

We have started packing things up and getting quotes and its more than I would like for what little we actually have so if anyone has a magic carpet do let me know ;)

Pitu being her crazy self fell and hit head, then decided to go unconscious; kids!!!

Lucky I have been watching House M.D. so I knew with a cane, lumbar puncture and MRI we could solve anything; just kidding, but she did knock herself out and quickly came to after a minute.

China did this once when she fell down the stairs at home - it is a horrible feeling to have your child go limp in your arms :-S

So thats all I have to report right now, but stay tuned - things are afoot ;)

The theme for this week was FIRE!

This was a hard one! Now normally I would jump at the chance to set things on fire, but doing it constructively is a different matter. One idea I would have loved to do was fire poi!
Sadly I don't have any and I wasn't going to buy some just for this shot; but it would have been cool.

Another crazy Idea I had was to set fire to an aerosol spray can, as they give off huge flames, sadly this too didn't work; spray too strong (its dangerous anyway, and should only be attempted by trained professionals or idiots)

I finally found a Martini glass, bought it, got it home set fire to it and it cracked, due to the heat!! So I substituted the Martini glass for a shot glass - which worked out better I noticed after looking at the shot (pun intended)

So I played with a few candles and sparklers, tried to write my name - forgot had to spell it backwards; its always the small details :-S

I thought of some other crazy ideas, but didn't get round to actually do any of them, but it did get me thinking at least.

Having taken so many photographs its easy to forget and miss some of them, so I thought I would put together a quick showreel.

I have never made one before nor for that matter have I used iMovie, so lots of learning today.

I did enjoy doing it although it did get frustrating at times. Thinking what music would be suitable, how to get the timing right, which photographs to use and what order should they be put into; see its not just thrown together, I work hard for myself and my audience ;)

I shall have to spend some time learning more about iMovie and hopefully as my photography improves I can make another showreel; which too will have improved.

Week 5 of 52

In order not to fall behind on this one I had started putting ideas together whilst completing Week 4. Also as I didn't have to work I had enough free time to devote to this week.

The theme for this week is LIQUID.

I was like the nutty professor in my room trying out some new ideas and making myself a mini tank; to do some really close up shots with my Macro lens.

I bought some 4"x6" photo frames, took out the glass panels and left about a half inch gap between them, then sealed the edges with silicone, left it to set and in the morning I had a VERY small tank in which I could put all manner of liquids and stuff for close up shots.
The purpose of this 'bubble tank' can be seen in the pictures.

To be honest I was spoilt for choice and I wasn't short of ideas, in fact trying to put interesting twists on the ideas was harder and took more time. I also revisited some of my earlier attempts at some photography ideas to see if I could improve upon them.

I took literally 100's of shots and narrowing down the chosen few was difficult, as just getting the shot on some took so long, I didn't want to just discard it. The hardest shot which has alluded me so far is the collision of water droplets, I managed to get some, but no where near as cool as the shots Ash has; HERE or even Julian's shot HERE (these are shots I'm dying to get.)
However, I tried and that's the point and I was a step closer having actually gotten some collisions.

After managing to narrow down the choices I have picked about 15 - there wont normally be this many, I just couldn't help myself ;)

WEEK 5 - LIQUID

An Apple a day

The first thing Apple did in their keynote speech was put to bed the idea of releasing a Netbook;

IT WONT HAPPEN!! Thank goodness for that. However, you may or may not have heard that Apple have decided to release their iPad.

What's an iPad? I hear you ask. Well think of an iPhone or iTouch and make it bigger.

The iPad screen is 9.7" it has 10 hours of battery life and it comes with all the gadgetry you would expect to find in an iTouch and then some! I was wondering why Apple hadn't developed much for the iPhone knowing it was such a big product for them and now I see why.

I really like my iTouch, the fact I can access what I want and it's so light and portable, but to be honest to view the web with, it just doesn't cut it.

The app store has had some great apps developed which makes for fun ways to while away the hours as well as being truly useful tools too. Apple (and others) have developed some amazing looking apps and programs to run specifically on the iPad. They have redesigned everyday programs to work simply from touch, now thats incredible! You really do have it all at your fingertips.

Apple are revolutionary when it comes to technology and yet again I'm sure this will be a big hit for them and copies will be springing up all over the place.

I honestly believe this is the ultimate tablet which companies have being trying to perfect for ages, and I didn't think Apple would bother, but they have and have done a great job.

I would however wait for the next gen of iPads before rushing out to buy one, as Apple will continue to develop this and improve upon it.

However if you cant wait why not go and buy one, afterall the best part of this story is they are ONLY $499!!!! Now from Apple that is EXCITING!!!

Week 4 of 52

Finally.... ....I managed to get some time to shoot week 4, yes its a little late, but better late than never. It could be harder than I thought to actually complete this thing, another 47 weeks to go!

What did I learn this week? There are not enough hours in a day!

Anyway the theme I chose for this week's challenge was CURVES

Not to hard almost everywhere I looked I could see them in one form or another; I managed to avoid taking shots of passing ladies ;)

As this one is late I also tried to spot some ideas for next weeks theme and I have some things up my sleeve, lets see if they work as I hope :-S

Anyway yet again its silly O'Clock (3.50am) and I'm just finishing uploading, so I'm off to bed.
